Position Overview:

The Optometrist is responsible for assessing patients with a variety of visual issues, diagnosing ocular diseases, and prescribing appropriate treatments in accordance with state regulations. This position also involves referring patients to other healthcare professionals within Kaiser Permanente for additional evaluation and management as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough examinations of patients experiencing a wide range of visual concerns using advanced optometric tools and methodologies.
  • Identify and diagnose ocular diseases and visual disorders, providing treatment plans compliant with Maryland state laws.
  • Fit and prescribe contact lenses tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Evaluate the visual requirements of patients with partial sight.
  • Recommend low-vision aids, including telescopic and microscopic lenses, to assist patients with low vision.
  • Utilize diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to identify and assess ocular conditions as permitted by state regulations.
  • Employ examination techniques to detect ocular manifestations of systemic diseases.
  • Refer patients to relevant Kaiser Permanente specialists for further care as needed.
  • Engage in departmental meetings and educational initiatives, including peer review processes.
  • Collaborate with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology regarding patient care strategies.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of eye care education programs for both staff and patients.
  • In partnership with an ophthalmologist, evaluate and manage anterior segment disorders under physician standing orders.
Position Details:

This is a full-time float position requiring travel between locations, with a commitment of 50% travel and one Saturday per month.

Qualifications:

Experience:
• Not applicable

Education:
• Graduation from an accredited Optometry program.
• Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire.

Licensure and Certification:
• Valid Optometrist License (Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia).
• Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association required at hire.
• National Provider Identifier must be obtained at hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least two years of experience in a collaborative healthcare setting or completion of an accredited residency program in Optometry is preferred.
