Job Summary:

To examine patients with a wide range of visual problems, diagnose visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribe treatment as licensed and credentialed. To refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive eye exams using a full range of optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnose and treat visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies in accordance with state laws and regulations.
  • Prescribe and fit contact lenses to meet the visual needs of patients.
  • Determine the visual requirements of patients with partial sight and prescribe low-vision aids as needed.
  • Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology in the state or jurisdiction in which licensed or under the standing orders of a physician.
  • Use examination techniques to identify ocular signs of systemic diseases and medications.
  • Refer patients to other Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities, within the department and medical facility.
  • Consult regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues.
  • Assist in implementing eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and at patient education seminars.
  • Under the standing orders of a physician and in co-management with an ophthalmologist, evaluate and manage anterior segment disorders.

Work Environment:

This is a full-time float position between Kensington and Gaithersburg with 50% travel and one required Saturday per month.

Basic Qualifications:

Education

· Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry.

· Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire date.

License, Certification, Registration

· Optometrist License (Maryland) OR Optometrist License (Virginia) OR Optometrist License (District of Columbia)

· Basic Life Support required at hire from American Heart Association

· National Provider Identifier required at hire

Preferred Qualifications:

· Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary health care environment preferred or successful completion of accredited residency program.

· Accredited residency in Optometry preferred.
