Job Summary:

To provide comprehensive eye care services to patients, including examinations, diagnoses, and treatment of visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies. Collaborate with other healthcare providers as needed to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough eye examinations using advanced optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Diagnose and treat visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribe treatment as licensed and credited.
  • Prescribe and fit contact lenses, and determine visual requirements of partially sighted patients.
  • Prescribe low-vision aids, such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices, to aid low-vision patients.
  • Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology, and refer patients to other appropriate healthcare providers as needed.
  • Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities, to stay up-to-date on best practices and advancements in eye care.
  • Consult regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues.
  • Assist in implementing eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and at patient education seminars.
  • Evaluate and manage anterior segment disorders, under the standing orders of a physician and in co-management with an ophthalmologist.
Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry is required. Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire date is also required. A valid Optometrist License in Maryland, Virginia, or the District of Columbia is necessary. Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire, as is a National Provider Identifier.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of two years of experience in an interdisciplinary healthcare environment is preferred, or successful completion of an accredited residency program. Accredited residency in Optometry is also preferred.
