Job Title: Advising Fellow

The Office of Undergraduate Education at the University of Virginia is seeking a talented educator to join their team as an Advising Fellow. This is a unique opportunity to work with first- and second-year students, helping them transition to college and develop strategies for academic success.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual and group advising to students, helping them navigate the college experience and make informed decisions about their academic and career paths.
  • Teach multiple courses in the Engagements program, which is designed to introduce students to the liberal arts and help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Design and lead faculty advisor training and student-facing workshops, focusing on topics such as academic support, career development, and campus resources.
  • Communicate with students through various channels, including scheduled meetings, walk-in hours, and electronic means, to ensure maximum connection and support.
  • Introduce students to the array of student support resources available across grounds, including academic advising, career counseling, and mental health services.
  • Assist students with course registration and degree declaration, ensuring they are on track to meet their academic goals.
  • Actively manage progress towards graduation for advisees, monitoring their progress and referring them to advising specialists when needed.
  • Participate in an Advising Community of Practice in the College, sharing best practices and collaborating with colleagues to improve student outcomes.
  • Maintain and possess knowledge about College curriculum and College and University academic policies, ensuring that students receive accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the value and purpose of a liberal arts education, adopting an empathetic and learner-centered approach to supporting students.
  • Demonstrate and maintain knowledge of research and best practices in student academic support, staying current with the latest trends and innovations in the field.
Qualifications:
  • PhD or terminal degree required.
  • Experience with the liberal arts preferred.

This is an exempt level, benefited position with an anticipated salary of $70,000.
