Fleet Maintenance Technician

Position Overview:
This entry-level role focuses on the preventive upkeep, repair, and refurbishment of gasoline and diesel automotive vehicles as well as heavy public works machinery.
Key Responsibilities:
Work entails performing maintenance tasks on a variety of vehicles including cars, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, construction machinery, street cleaning vehicles, firefighting apparatus, police vehicles, and other related auxiliary equipment.
Individuals in this position will be responsible for:
- Conducting chassis lubrication and changing engine oil and filters.
- Inspecting fluid levels and performing comprehensive assessments of serviced vehicles.
- Assisting skilled mechanics in their duties.
Work is carried out under general supervision, with evaluations typically occurring upon completion through test drives, prepared work reports, and observation of outcomes.

- Execute chassis lubrication and oil changes on various vehicles and equipment.
- Carry out preventive maintenance on the entire fleet.
- Prepare standard repair and maintenance reports for all tasks performed.
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret wiring, hydraulic, air systems, schematics, and mechanical operations.
- Support mechanics in their responsibilities.
- Perform related tasks as necessary.
Training Opportunities:
This position will involve training in the following areas:
- Preventive maintenance for university vehicles and equipment.
- Routine servicing of automotive and equipment operating systems.
- Lubrication and fluid level maintenance on university vehicles.
- Diagnostic procedures for hydraulic, electronic, and mechanical systems.
- Preparation of new units and decommissioning of surplus units.
- Maintenance of fueling systems for university vehicles.
- Familiarization with fleet management software.
- A variety of maintenance tasks including cleaning and sanitizing equipment.
Qualifications:
General Skill Levels:
Knowledge of:
- Vehicle and equipment maintenance practices.
- Standard methods, tools, and diagnostic equipment used in automotive repair.
- Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
- Safety hazards and precautions necessary in automotive mechanical work.
- Computer programs for data entry and retrieval.
Skills in:
- Utilizing standard automotive maintenance tools and equipment.
- Organizing tasks, prioritizing work, and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Exercising discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines.
Ability to:
- Work independently with minimal technical oversight.
- Make informed decisions based on established criteria.
- Utilize various advisory data such as safety regulations and service manuals.
- Clearly explain and demonstrate procedures to others within established policies.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent, with vocational/technical training in automotive mechanics preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Required to possess or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License.
- Successful candidates must achieve at least one ASE certification annually related to automotive maintenance.
