About the Role
The City of Burlington, Solid Waste Division is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator I to join our team. As an Equipment Operator I, you will be responsible for operating one piece of equipment, such as a rear loader or boom truck, to collect solid waste and yard waste materials.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive trucks over prescribed routes to collect yard waste and junk/trash from curbside.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip/post-trip inspections and perform other routine preventative maintenance.
- Ability to operate a forklift.
- Clean and properly maintain equipment.
- Employees could be assigned to a yard waste crew, garbage collection crew, or bulk junk crew to collect items placed curbside for collection.
- Clean area around cans and pick up loose trash.
- Assist with dumping solid waste at the landfill.
- Work in a manner that ensures the safety of self and co-workers.
- Operate CDL required vehicles as needed.
- Use Mobile 311 device to record locations for pickup and report challenge areas.
- Answer questions from citizens regarding Solid Waste Division procedures and practices.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency, experience working outdoors.
- Valid NC Driver's license.
- Class (A or B) CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months of employment date.
Working Conditions
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, feeling, and repetitive motions.
- Employees must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance. Must possess visual acuity to operate a Solid Waste collection vehicle and collect garbage and refuse.
