Role Summary:

The Executive Vice President of Operations will provide strategic leadership and direction to the operations team, ensuring alignment with the company’s vision and objectives. This role demands a seasoned leader with extensive experience in construction management, a successful history in preconstruction and project delivery, and robust financial expertise. The EVP will collaborate closely with senior leadership to promote business growth, operational excellence, and industry leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Work with the Executive Vice President and senior leaders to define strategic direction and business goals for commercial projects.
    • Oversee the formulation and implementation of operational strategies that align with corporate objectives.
    • Act as the regional market authority, providing expertise and driving market expansion.
  • Client Engagement and Business Development:
    • Develop and maintain Suffolk’s regional network of relationships with developers, partners, and community stakeholders.
    • Utilize industry connections to generate project leads and facilitate acquisition.
    • Identify and pursue new business opportunities in line with regional and corporate strategies.
    • Support the General Manager in managing subcontractor relationships.
    • Engage in industry events and associations to enhance visibility.
    • Assign staff to preconstruction tasks and oversee preconstruction agreements.
    • Direct the RFP response strategy, including project-specific content and interview preparation.
    • Participate in contract negotiations.
    • Collaborate with the General Manager to set financial performance targets and monitor compliance with company standards.
  • Financial Oversight:
    • Establish financial performance objectives for projects and implement strategies to meet these goals.
    • Review and analyze financial reports, guiding project teams accordingly.
    • Oversee monthly financial forecasts and ensure adherence to financial plans.
    • Monitor project cash flow to achieve financial targets.
    • Manage monthly requisition processes.
  • Team Development:
    • Recruit and onboard key operational personnel, ensuring the team possesses the necessary skills to meet business objectives.
    • Evaluate team performance, providing constructive feedback and growth opportunities.
    • Mentor emerging leaders and support training initiatives.
    • Monitor assignments of Project Executives and VPs, providing mentorship and coaching.
    • Engage in the recruitment of key operational roles.
    • Demonstrate visible leadership at company events and industry conferences.
  • Preconstruction Management:
    • Oversee preconstruction activities on assigned projects, supporting the President and preconstruction services leader.
    • Collaborate with cost estimators to create accurate project GMPs.
    • Draft or approve detailed scopes of work for subcontractors.
  • Construction Operations:
    • Ensure compliance with the company’s Standard Operating Procedures across all construction activities.
    • Conduct regular meetings with Project Executives to assess overall project performance.
    • Develop project execution plans, including baseline schedules, utilizing Lean planning resources.
    • Review schedule updates and participate in monthly review meetings.
    • Analyze monthly KPIs, evaluate trends, and drive continuous improvement.
    • Set project milestones and assign qualified staff to manage project scope and complexity.
    • Collaborate with regional leaders to ensure operational excellence and champion corporate initiatives.
    • Promote a culture of safety throughout the region.
    • Ensure effective crisis management planning is in place.
    • Facilitate information sharing across the region.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in construction management, with at least 10 years in a senior leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated success in project delivery and financial management for large-scale construction initiatives.
  • Strong expertise in construction operations, preconstruction, and client relations.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in project management software and financial analysis tools.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary to support business operations.

Working Conditions:

This role requires the ability to sit for extended periods, engage in verbal communication, and perform fine motor skills using a keyboard or writing. The employee will frequently stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The position is primarily office-based with a moderate noise level, along with occasional site visits.
