Environmental Education Instructor

About the Role
The Youth Programs at QBG engage children aged 2 to 18 from across the city, providing them with enriching, hands-on experiences in gardening and environmental education throughout the year. Participants delve into themes of ecological balance, sustainability, and conservation, learning essential skills such as soil preparation, seed selection, and plant care. They also have the opportunity to harvest their own produce, transforming it into healthy snacks during classroom sessions. Our programs are designed to foster an immersive learning environment, balancing structured activities with free exploration to nurture children's innate curiosity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging environmental, artistic, and gardening education aligned with QBG standards, both at the Garden and within the community.
- Conduct programs outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
- Facilitate learning for elementary school-aged groups.
- Manage groups of 8-10 students.
- Collaborate with the Education Manager and fellow staff to create interactive workshops and activities focused on gardening and sustainability.
- Mentor and support 2-4 interns or volunteers to enhance program delivery.
- Establish a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Prepare and organize materials necessary for scheduled programs.
- Set up and dismantle program spaces as needed.
- Adapt lesson plans to meet the diverse needs of participants.
- Assist with horticultural tasks, including seeding, weeding, mulching, and watering.
- Support additional initiatives within the Education Department.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or two years of relevant experience in education, environmental science, or a related field.
- Experience managing groups, particularly with children.
- Knowledge in botany, environmental studies, or life sciences is advantageous.
- Experience working with special education or neurodiverse children is a plus.
- Demonstrated interest in engaging with diverse communities.
- Ability to work effectively with varying group sizes.
- Positive and collaborative demeanor.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Availability for two half-day sessions per week, totaling 8 hours.
Schedule:
This is a part-time seasonal position with programming primarily on weekends.
Compensation: The hourly wage is $20.
Health & Safety: Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination is required for employment.
