Queens, New York, United States Queens Botanical Garden Society Full time
Position Overview

Queens Botanical Garden serves as a vibrant urban sanctuary where diverse communities, flora, and cultures are honored through engaging gardens and innovative educational initiatives.

About the Role

The Youth Programs at QBG unite children aged 2 to 18 from various backgrounds across New York City, offering seasonal, hands-on learning and gardening activities throughout the year. Participants delve into the principles of ecological balance, sustainability, and conservation as they engage in preparing soil, selecting seeds and plants, and nurturing their own vegetables, flowers, and herbs, which they transform into healthy snacks in the classroom. These concepts are explored at developmentally appropriate levels across different seasons, ensuring an immersive experience that combines structured guidance with opportunities for free exploration, fostering natural curiosity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver QBG's environmental, artistic, sustainability, and gardening programs according to established standards, either on-site or within the community.
    • All programming occurs outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
    • Target audience includes elementary school-aged children.
    • Class sizes typically range from 8 to 10 students.
  • Collaborate with the Education Manager and other staff to design and implement interactive and engaging workshops focused on gardening and environmental sustainability.
  • Mentor and guide 2-4 interns or volunteers to meet program requirements.
  • Create a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Prepare and organize all necessary materials for scheduled activities.
  • Set up and dismantle program spaces as needed.
  • Adapt and refine lesson plans based on the needs of participants.
  • Assist with horticultural tasks, including seeding, weeding, mulching, pruning, raking, watering, mowing, weed whacking, transplanting, and propagation.
  • Support additional initiatives within the Education Department.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or two years of relevant experience in education, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Experience managing groups, particularly with children.
  • Background in teaching subjects such as botany, environmental studies, ethnobotany, or life sciences is advantageous.
  • Experience working with special education or neurodiverse children is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in engaging with diverse communities.
  • Ability to work effectively with varying group sizes of children and adults.
  • Enthusiastic and cooperative demeanor.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Availability to commit to two half days of programming each week, totaling 8 hours.

Compensation: The hourly wage for this position is $20.

Health & Safety: Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination is required for employment.
