About the Role

The Youth Programs at QBG engage children aged 2 to 18 from various backgrounds across New York City, offering enriching, hands-on experiences in gardening and environmental education throughout the year. Participants delve into essential concepts of ecological sustainability and conservation, learning practical skills such as soil preparation, seed selection, and plant care. This immersive program fosters curiosity and creativity through a blend of structured activities and free exploration, tailored to different age groups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver QBG's environmental, artistic, and gardening programs according to established standards, both on-site and within the community.
    • Conduct all programming outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
    • Engage with elementary school-aged students in groups of 8-10.
  • Collaborate with the Education Manager and fellow staff to design and implement interactive workshops focused on gardening and sustainability.
  • Mentor and guide 2-4 interns or volunteers to meet program objectives.
  • Create a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Prepare and organize materials for scheduled activities.
  • Set up and dismantle program spaces as needed.
  • Adapt lesson plans based on the needs of participants.
  • Assist with horticultural tasks including seeding, weeding, and maintenance of garden areas.
  • Support additional initiatives within the Education Department.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or two years of relevant experience in education, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Experience managing groups, particularly with children.
  • Background in teaching subjects related to botany, environmental studies, or life sciences is advantageous.
  • Experience with special education or working with neurodiverse children is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in engaging with diverse communities.
  • Ability to work effectively with varying group sizes of children and adults.
  • Enthusiastic and cooperative approach to teamwork.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Availability for two half days of programming each week, totaling 8 hours.

Compensation: The position offers a competitive hourly wage.

Health & Safety: Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination is required for employment.
