POSITION SUMMARY:

This role is designed for the Senior Research Scientist at the Research Institute for Tactical Autonomy (RITA), University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). The Senior Research Scientist will spearhead initiatives in pioneering research within AI/ML, ensuring alignment with the strategic goals of Howard University and adherence to U.S. Air Force standards. This position encompasses strategic leadership, oversight of interdisciplinary research, and collaboration with various stakeholders. The primary responsibility is to provide vision and direction to ensure the center's success.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountable for supervising research teams, managing faculty partnerships, and liaising with external collaborators, including defense agencies and the Air Force Research Lab.

ENVIRONMENT AND SCOPE:
Internal interactions include university leaders, faculty, and staff across diverse departments. External engagements involve federal representatives, industry collaborators, and other research institutions. This role requires extensive interaction for strategic planning, research coordination, and compliance management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and manage RITA UARC research projects, ensuring alignment with Howard University's strategic objectives and U.S. Air Force requirements.
  • Encourage a culture of innovation in AI/ML research, delivering impactful projects and maintaining the UARC's leadership in technological advancements.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant regulations and contractual commitments, overseeing the center's administrative and financial operations in collaboration with the Office of Research.
  • Provide strategic guidance and vision with UARC's consortium members to develop compelling research proposals for RITA's sponsors.
  • Oversee laboratory budgets, projects, and resources.
  • Develop and mentor laboratory staff and leadership.
  • Communicate and collaborate with sponsors, lab personnel, RITA leadership, consortium members, and the Howard University Research Community.
  • Establish and maintain a RITA Research Leadership Team that exemplifies integrity while fostering excellence, diversity, and innovation.
  • Develop and prioritize long-term research directions in partnership with the RITA Research Leadership Team.
  • Determine research staffing needs; facilitate the interviewing, hiring, and training of new team members.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Outstanding leadership and organizational capabilities, with a robust background in AI/ML.
  • Demonstrated experience in research management and collaboration with defense organizations.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with large-scale, multi-year federally sponsored projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A doctoral degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in AI/ML research, ideally with a focus on applications in defense or related fields.
  • Proven leadership in managing research teams and projects, with a history of successful collaboration and innovation.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance.
  • Demonstrated success in managing large multimillion-dollar federal grants.
