Job Description

The Retail Sales Associate role is crucial to delivering exceptional customer service, treating all donations with care, maintaining a clean and organized store environment, and fostering respectful communication among coworkers and customers.

This position has a direct impact on the success of the store, which in turn affects the success of our Programs and Mission Department. Your successful completion of all job responsibilities directly influences all team members in the store, the leadership team, your direct supervisor, customers, donors, and participants.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Outstanding Customer Service:
    • Greet every customer as they enter the store, which can be as simple as a smile or wave, if able verbally, acknowledge.
    • Offer to assist customers when not handling transactions.
    • Understand the store floor plan to accurately direct customers. When able, walk to the desired location.
    • Be friendly but aware of time spent with each customer, avoiding personal conversations.
    • If the line at the register has more than 3 customers or if a customer has a concern or question you are unsure of, page for immediate assistance from a backup cashier/manager.
    • Never become confrontational.
    • Pay careful attention when handling customer purchases, being gentle and respectful with items. Use paper to wrap breakables, double bag as needed, or ask for a box from the back. When handling textiles, gently place them in a bag when scanning the item.
    • Thank and invite back all customers, even if someone leaves without a purchase, thank them as well and invite them back.
  • Accurate Cash Handling:
    • At the start of the shift, count the drawer, write the date and cashier initials on the tape from the adding machine, and place it in the drawer before signing out from the cashier tracking form.
    • With the lid locked, place the drawer in the POS (Point of Sale) assigned.
    • Count back change with every transaction, leaving customer cash on top of the drawer until the change is verified and counted back to the customer. Give the receipt, offer the blue card, and ALWAYS ask for a round-up.
    • When the icon pops up to have a cash drop, notify the manager on duty and follow the procedure.
    • When the shift ends, the manager will pull the tape, lock the lid on the drawer, and proceed to the cash office.
    • Count the drawer down, have management verify, and sign the appropriate tracker.
    • If the cash does not balance, the manager will fill out an investigation form and send it to HR/Finance.
  • Maintain Safety & Security Measures:
    • At the end of each shift, complete the 5-minute drill, ensuring the cash area is organized, stocked, and clean for the next shift.
    • Report any incidents of unsafe working conditions immediately to the manager on duty.
    • Report any tag discrepancies, missing tags, or no tags to the manager on duty at once.
    • Follow through with all state and federal health regulations and company safety policy and procedures.
    • Report to the manager on duty any suspicious behaviors.
