Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Dentist to join our team in a correctional facility setting. As a Dentist with the Virginia Department of Corrections, you will be responsible for providing routine and emergency dental care to adult inmates, as well as supervising dental assistants and hygienists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and emergency dental care to adult inmates, including examining teeth and gums, taking x-rays, and performing fillings and extractions as needed.
  • Supervise dental assistants and hygienists, providing clinical guidance and support.
  • Diagnose and develop treatment plans for patients, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and deformities of the oral cavity.
  • Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

Requirements

  • Must have a degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA).
  • Must be licensed to practice dentistry in Virginia.
  • Must have a controlled substances certificate from the Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to diagnose and treat oral health issues and inform patients on preventative care and treatment.
  • Must be able to travel to surrounding institutions and field units as part of the Mobile Dental Team, providing dental care and oral healthcare to patients at those sites.
  • Must have experience with restoration and replacement of teeth damaged from decay, trauma, or disease.
  • Must have working knowledge of general dentistry.
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in written form in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous supervisory experience or work experience training and supervising dental staff.
  • Experience providing dental care and treatment in a dentist office, military, or correctional setting.
