Job Summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a skilled and compassionate individual to fill the role of Program Monitor at our Cooling Center. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our clients, while also providing exceptional customer service and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor clients to maintain order and ensure a safe environment within the Cooling Center.
  • Admit homeless individuals to the shelter, complete intake procedures, and assign beds to occupants.
  • Screen admissions for weapons and confiscate any identified items.
  • Observe client behavior and intervene as necessary to address conflicts or suspected substance abuse.
  • Collaborate with emergency services and law enforcement as needed to maintain a secure environment.
  • Utilize crisis intervention skills to address conflicts and provide mediation as required.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, staff, and community partners.
  • Assist with daily record-keeping, cleaning, and laundry duties.
  • Ensure clients are settled for the night and awakened in the morning.
  • Provide information on services offered by The Salvation Army and other organizations.
  • Assist with volunteer groups and maintain a positive work atmosphere.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with three years of experience in a social service agency or five years of experience without a diploma.
  • Higher education in psychology, social work, criminal justice, or a related field is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse cultures.
  • Computer skills are desirable.

Working Conditions

The Program Monitor will work primarily indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. The ability to provide transportation for clients as needed is also required.
