The primary objective of this role is to deliver educational support under the guidance of a certified teacher, assisting in the execution of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, whether in classrooms or in other settings as required.

Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts is a distinctive fine arts magnet institution that promotes both academic and artistic excellence for students in grades six through twelve. The school integrates a challenging college preparatory curriculum with an outstanding arts program, allowing students to specialize in one of eight disciplines, including acting, instrumental music, communications/film, musical theater, visual arts, vocal performance, technical theater, and dance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide educational support to students with disabilities; assist in the preparation, modification, and utilization of instructional materials tailored to individual student needs; aid in the development and execution of Individual Education Programs; assist in data collection and monitoring of students' physical, communication, social/emotional, and educational development; employ specialized educational strategies to meet students' academic requirements.
  • Offer physical assistance as needed, including but not limited to toileting, positioning, lifting, carrying, feeding, and personal hygiene, as determined by each student's Individual Education Program.
  • Supervise or cover classes during the brief absence of the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher and engage with students during various classroom activities; prepare instructional materials for classroom use; support instructional and assistive technology.
  • Contribute to data collection and progress monitoring to evaluate student performance and skill levels.
  • Adhere to established safety procedures to ensure student well-being.
  • Perform clerical tasks to support teaching activities, office operations, and other school functions.
  • Respond appropriately to students' inappropriate behaviors; be willing to undergo training and maintain certification in non-violent positive behavioral interventions and support methods.
  • Support students and model appropriate social and professional behaviors during community experiences or work-based learning.
  • Chaperone students on field trips occurring during the regular school day.
  • Perform tasks requiring reading, writing, numeracy, oral and written communication skills, and the use of various equipment and technology to ensure compliance with IDEA and implement student IEPs.
  • Demonstrate basic sign language skills, communication facilitation competencies, and Braille skills as necessary.
  • Communicate with supervisors, school officials, teachers, students, parents, vendors, and the community to coordinate work activities under the direction of administration or special education supervisors.
  • Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, IEP-Team meetings, or other required meetings.
  • Follow established procedures to maintain safety in assigned areas.
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisors, administrators, staff, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Uphold confidentiality standards.
  • Adhere to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include lifting, transferring, and positioning students with physical support needs; appropriate use of assistive technology; feeding/oral-motor interventions; signing; Braille instructional materials; and augmentative systems.
Qualifications

Knowledge/Education/Experience:
  • A high school diploma or GED is required; basic technology skills are necessary; general office/clerical experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Candidates must possess one of the following before commencing work: semester hours or 72 quarter hours; (2) an Associate's degree or higher; (3) a passing score on the PRAXIS for Parapro Exam. One year of experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
