Role Purpose
The primary objective of this position is to provide educational assistance and support under the guidance of a licensed special education teacher, facilitating the implementation of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities in both general and specialized educational settings.

- Willingness to receive training in nonviolent crisis intervention techniques.
- Ability to effectively utilize verbal and nonverbal strategies to prevent or de-escalate challenging behaviors.
- Competence in assertive communication, including expressing empathy, addressing conflict behavior, and proposing solutions.
- Capability to maintain group safety during emergencies or teacher absences.
- Assist students with disabilities by preparing, modifying, and employing instructional materials tailored to individual needs; aid in the development and execution of IEPs; and support data collection and progress monitoring across various developmental domains.
- Provide necessary physical assistance to students, including personal hygiene and mobility support, as outlined in their IEPs.
- Supervise and cover classes during brief teacher absences.
- Collaborate with teachers and assist students during classroom activities; prepare instructional materials; and support the use of educational technology.
- Contribute to data collection and monitoring to assess student performance and skill levels.
- Adhere to established safety protocols for students.
- Perform clerical tasks to support educational activities and school operations.
- Respond appropriately to student behaviors and be open to training in positive behavioral interventions and support methods.
- Model appropriate social and professional behaviors during community engagement or work-based learning experiences.
- Accompany students on field trips during regular school hours.
- Complete tasks requiring reading, writing, numeracy, and effective communication skills, while utilizing various technologies to support educational compliance.
- Demonstrate basic sign language skills and communication facilitation competencies as needed.
- Engage with supervisors, school officials, teachers, students, parents, and community members to coordinate activities under the direction of administration or special education supervisors.
- Participate in staff meetings, parent meetings, IEP team meetings, and other required gatherings.
- Ensure safety in assigned areas following established procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with supervisors, administrators, colleagues, students, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to the Teacher Code of Ethics as mandated by Tennessee Law.
- Additional responsibilities may include assisting with physical support needs, utilizing assistive technology, and performing other assigned duties.
Education and Experience:
- A high school diploma or GED is required; basic technology skills and general office experience are essential; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role. Candidates must possess one of the following prior to employment: semester hours or 72 quarter hours; an Associate's degree or higher; or a passing score on the PRAXIS Parapro Exam. One year of experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
