Position Overview

The primary function of this position is to assist in the educational process under the guidance of a certified educator, focusing on the execution of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support students with disabilities by preparing, adapting, and employing instructional resources tailored to their unique needs; aid in the formulation and execution of IEPs; assist in gathering data and monitoring the progress of students' physical, communicative, social/emotional, and academic development; utilize specialized educational techniques to address individual learning requirements.
  • Provide necessary physical support, including but not limited to assistance with toileting, positioning, lifting, carrying, feeding, and personal hygiene, as dictated by each student's IEP.
  • Supervise and manage classroom activities during the temporary absence of the teacher.
  • Collaborate with the teacher and engage with students during various educational activities; prepare instructional materials for classroom application; assist with both instructional and assistive technology.
  • Contribute to data collection and progress assessment utilized for evaluating student performance and skill development.
  • Adhere to established safety protocols to ensure a secure environment for students.
  • Perform clerical duties to support educational activities, office functions, and other school operations.
  • Respond appropriately to students' behavioral challenges; be open to training and maintain certification in non-violent behavioral intervention strategies to effectively manage and de-escalate aggressive behaviors when necessary.
  • Guide students and exemplify suitable social and professional conduct during community engagement or work-based learning experiences.
  • Accompany students on field trips that occur during regular school hours.
  • Engage in tasks that require reading, writing, numeracy, and effective communication skills, along with the use of various tools and technologies to support educational compliance and the implementation of student IEPs.
  • Exhibit basic proficiency in sign language, communication facilitation, and Braille skills as required.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, school personnel, teachers, students, parents, and community members to coordinate activities under the direction of administration or special education supervisors.
  • Participate in staff meetings, parent conferences, IEP team discussions, and other required gatherings.
  • Follow established safety procedures to maintain secure environments.
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisors, administrators, colleagues, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Uphold confidentiality standards.
  • Adhere to the Teacher Code of Ethics as outlined by state law.
  • Additional responsibilities may include lifting, transferring, and positioning students with physical support needs; appropriate utilization of assistive technology; feeding interventions; signing; Braille adaptation of instructional materials; and other related tasks.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
Qualifications

Knowledge/Education/Experience:
  • A high school diploma or GED is required; basic technology skills are necessary; prior office or clerical experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role. Familiarity with the PreK-12 general curriculum is essential. Candidates must possess one of the following prior to starting: semester hours or 72 quarter hours; an Associate's degree or higher; or a passing score on the PRAXIS Parapro Exam. One year of experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
