Personal Care Assistant/Medication Technician

POSITION OVERVIEW: This role is dedicated to delivering personal assistance and specific health-related services aimed at preserving the physical and emotional health of residents at Sunlight Senior Living. The incumbent will support residents with daily living activities as outlined in their Service Agreement, the Medication Administration Record (MAR), and other responsibilities as assigned by the Registered Nurse (RN). REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School diploma or equivalent experience.
  • CNA/NAR or HHA certification is preferred.
  • Experience working with senior populations is essential.
KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The ideal candidate must:
  • Exhibit compassion and skill in working with elderly individuals.
  • Effectively prioritize and manage tasks.
  • Communicate clearly with residents, families, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Read, write, and understand basic instructions and documentation, including medical terms, in English.
  • Maintain punctuality and a reliable attendance record.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Understand the use and responsibility of a mobile phone while on duty.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Medication Management
  • Administer medications and provide reminders to residents as per the MAR and RN directives.
  • Adhere to policies for administering PRN medications.
  • Follow established procedures for narcotic administration and documentation.
  • Comply with protocols when residents are leaving the facility with medications.
  • Manage new or altered medication orders according to policy.
  • Order medications and supplies weekly or as necessary.
  • Understand and implement infection control precautions.
  • Perform additional medication-related tasks as directed by the RN.
Direct Resident Care
  • Assist residents with daily living activities as specified in their service agreements, including dressing, bathing, grooming, and mobility assistance.
  • Support residents in maintaining their living spaces and assist with light housekeeping.
  • Help residents with personal laundry tasks, including ironing.
  • Ensure a clean and safe environment for residents.
  • Encourage resident independence by offering choices and promoting self-care skills.
  • Carry out routine tasks as assigned by the RN.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Record any changes in residents' conditions in their charts and communication logs, reporting these to the RN.
  • Complete incident reports in accordance with policy.
  • Notify the RN of any medication changes or PRN medications administered.
  • Understand assisted living task procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Recognize and report abnormal signs or changes in residents' conditions.
  • Document completed duties in the service delivery record during each shift.
Administrative Duties
  • File necessary documents in residents' charts.
  • Sign Medication Administration Records (MARs) monthly.
  • Review and sign new residents' care plans and weekly service records.
  • Check the communication book and employee mailbox before each shift.
  • Manage outgoing and incoming mail for residents.
  • Complete other documentation as required.
Regulatory Knowledge
  • Understand and comply with the Vulnerable Adult and abuse policies, Bill of Rights, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Ensure the facility meets federal, state, and local standards and regulations.
  • Complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of documented training annually.
  • Stay current with required health screenings.
Activity Engagement
  • Encourage residents to participate in scheduled activities and programs.
  • Lead assigned activity programs.
  • Engage with residents and incorporate their suggestions into programming.
Team Collaboration
  • Foster positive relationships with fellow staff, including unlicensed personnel, housekeeping, nursing, and kitchen staff.
  • Provide support to colleagues as needed to ensure continuous staffing.
  • Communicate residents' care needs and changes effectively with the team and families.
  • Participate constructively in staff meetings.
  • Exhibit compassion and ethical awareness in all interactions.
  • Adapt to changing situations with flexibility.
  • Respond appropriately to safety hazards and emergencies.
  • Complete assigned duties promptly.
  • Assist kitchen staff during meal service.
  • Provide training for new team members.
  • Maintain a calm and kind demeanor in all circumstances.
  • Demonstrate the ability to remain composed in challenging situations.
