Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Physics Demonstrations Specialist to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing physics demonstrations and laboratory activities for our undergraduate physics courses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development of Physics Demonstrations
    • Conceive, design, and develop new physics demonstrations and laboratory activities to illustrate complex physics concepts.
    • Collaborate with faculty members to identify areas where demonstrations can be improved or new ones can be developed.
    • Apply advanced knowledge of theoretical physics and physics pedagogy to create engaging and effective demonstrations.
  • Laboratory Management and Maintenance
    • Manage and maintain the physics laboratory equipment and facilities, ensuring they are in good working order and meet safety standards.
    • Coordinate the setup and takedown of laboratory equipment and demonstrations.
    • Ensure that all laboratory activities are conducted in a safe and controlled environment.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Work closely with faculty members, teaching assistants, and other laboratory staff to ensure smooth operation of laboratory activities.
    • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff to provide support and guidance on laboratory activities.
    • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Professional Development
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in physics education and laboratory techniques.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in physics education and laboratory management.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in Physics or a related field.
  • Experience
    • Three years of experience in a research or teaching laboratory environment, with a focus on physics demonstrations and laboratory activities.
  • Skills
    • Advanced knowledge of theoretical physics and physics pedagogy.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree
    • Master's or Ph.D. in Physics or a related field.
  • Experience
    • Experience in developing instructional materials and laboratory activities.
