About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) is dedicated to delivering healthcare services at George Mason University. SHS offers primary care and health promotion to eligible students, which includes initial assessments, follow-up evaluations, comprehensive history taking, physical examinations, differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations, referrals, and basic emergency treatment.

About the Position:

The Medical Assistant collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care in a clinical environment. This role involves utilizing clinical and laboratory skills to prepare patients for provider consultations, administer prescribed treatments and medications, perform diagnostic tests, and fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Skills: Accurately record patient intake, including vital signs, allergies, and medications. Conduct essential procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid. Assist healthcare providers during procedures and support sensitive examinations. Adhere to OSHA safety standards, including the handling of biohazard materials. Ensure a safe environment for both staff and patients through proper sterilization of instruments and the maintenance of supplies. Stay updated on competencies and knowledge through orientation, ongoing training, and annual infection control training.

Laboratory/Phlebotomy Techniques and Safety Practices: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment safely. Conduct CUA waived testing and demonstrate proficiency in phlebotomy while adhering to universal safety precautions. Ensure accurate documentation of laboratory test results and manage hazardous materials appropriately.

Administers Immunizations: Safely and accurately administer immunizations while participating in annual safe injection practices training. Maintain knowledge of CDC guidelines for vaccine recommendations and educate patients on required and administered vaccines.

Committee Assignment: Engage as a member of a SHS committee; attend meetings, follow through on assignments, and contribute to maintaining high-quality healthcare standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • Medical Assistant certification or equivalent training and experience;
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology;
  • Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records;
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification;
  • Experience in a medical office, hospital, or healthcare setting;
  • Familiarity with Electronic Health Record and Telehealth systems;
  • Experience with records management;
  • Understanding of the unique needs of college students;
  • Experience in obtaining patient history, vital signs, and chief complaints;
  • Basic knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements;
  • Experience in payment handling and patient check-in/out procedures;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and foster teamwork.
