Position Title: Mechanical Engineer III

Company Overview:
Michigan State University (MSU) is home to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a premier user facility supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. FRIB is dedicated to advancing research in nuclear physics, providing scientists with state-of-the-art tools to explore rare isotopes and their applications in various fields, including medicine and industry.

Role Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer III will act as a key technical authority, offering expertise and direction for the mechanical systems at FRIB. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research and innovation in nuclear science.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Evaluate designs and supervise the implementation of mechanical utility systems.
2. Enhance and manage the Mechanical Safety Program.
3. Organize and lead design assessments and pressure safety evaluations.
4. Provide strategic insights and planning for mechanical utility systems.
5. Review documentation and operational plans to ensure compliance with safety standards.
6. Establish mechanical design criteria for use by technical teams.
7. Facilitate the application of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
8. Oversee the fire alarm system operations.
9. Perform additional duties as assigned that align with the responsibilities of this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth understanding of mechanical utility systems and relevant codes.
- Familiarity with mechanical safety protocols and the ability to coordinate safety initiatives.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and a commitment to safety compliance.
- Proficient in troubleshooting mechanical processes.
- General awareness of particle accelerators and associated systems, including vacuum and cryogenics.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively engage with diverse audiences.
- Working knowledge of mechanical codes and standards, including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
- Proven problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills.
- Capacity to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics.
- Five to eight years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, including physics, mechanical drafting, and systems design.
- Experience with CAD and engineering systems is preferred.
- Familiarity with exotic metals and their applications in research equipment fabrication is advantageous.

Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Five years of industry or military experience.
- Proven project management experience.
- Demonstrated success in mechanical utility systems analysis, design, or installation.
- Professional Engineering Licensure is a plus.
