Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing academic support services to students participating in the Talent Search program. The successful candidate will work under minimal supervision to counsel and oversee academic services, prepare reports and newsletters, track and document student data, and design programs and workshops.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor all aspects of the respective academic programs.
  • Coordinate student transportation, facilities, and equipment needs of the program.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings with the Program Director and other staff to plan and evaluate program operations.
  • Complete data collection functions using technology-based tools to gather, assemble, and report statistics on program metrics.
  • Prepare monthly counseling reports and weekly tutorial schedules, etc., as deemed appropriate by the Program Director.
  • Review and recommend instructional materials to be used in the program.
  • Develop and implement college prep workshops for parents and students.
  • Develop and implement financial aid orientations and assist with scholarship searches and workshops.
  • Complete college admissions procedures.
  • Plan and coordinate field trips and cultural programs.
  • Track students' academic, behavioral, and attendance records in school and during Educational Talent Search activities to include monitoring students and program progress and reporting results.
  • Track grades and test scores.
  • Assist in student recruitment.
  • Develop and implement student identification and selection procedures.
  • Advise participants of middle school, high school, and college requirements.
  • Provide academic counseling and workshops.
  • Document student engagement with case notes.
  • Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skill Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related area.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience working for a TRIO federal program or similar program servicing low-income and potential first-generation college students.
  • Proven experience in working with disadvantaged and underrepresented students or young adult populations.
  • Knowledge of academic advising and college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy activities and related services.
  • Have a workable knowledge and understanding of the Education Department General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) specific to compliance, cost principles, and administrative responsibilities that govern TRIO programs.
  • Familiar with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-21, along with the Federal Register and how they apply to programmatic principles.
  • Working knowledge of respective county.
  • Ability to empathize and work with persons representing culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain strict accuracy and be detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be self-motivated.
  • Proven experience with Microsoft Office and Windows applications to include competence in word processing, database, and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to interact diplomatically with the public, support staff, and College administrators in a professional, diplomatic, timely, and confidential manner.
  • Valid Florida Driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in academic and career advising.
  • Knowledge of implementing and evaluating academic programs through core curricula in the content areas of math, laboratory science, composition and language, study skills development, and ACT and SAT techniques.
  • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Program participants.
