Job Summary

Rela Language Professionals is seeking a skilled Language Interpreter/Cultural Consultant to facilitate communication between healthcare providers and limited English proficient patients. As a Medical Interpreter and Cultural Liaison, you will play a vital role in ensuring clear and effective communication between patients and providers while adhering to the Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.

About the Role

As a Language Interpreter/Cultural Consultant, you will conduct pre-sessions with both patients and providers to explain the interpreter's role, interpret medical advice and information accurately while maintaining confidentiality, and assure patient comprehension and assist with appointment scheduling.

Responsibilities

  1. Conduct pre-session briefings with patients and healthcare providers to explain the interpreter's role and responsibilities.
  2. Interpret medical information and advice accurately and confidentially, ensuring clear communication between patients and healthcare providers.
  3. Assist patients with appointment scheduling and ensure they understand their medical instructions.
  4. Maintain strict patient confidentiality and adhere to professional boundaries.
  5. Explain cultural differences or practices to healthcare providers and patients when appropriate.
  6. Exhibit a positive attitude, customer service orientation, and professionalism in all interactions.
  7. Be punctual and adhere to the Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.

Requirements

  • Fluency in English and the non-English working language, with the ability to understand complex grammar, structure, syntax, and medical terminology in both languages.
  • Prior experience or training in medical terminology is preferred but not required, as long as the candidate is willing to learn and adapt quickly.
  • One year of related experience and a high school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a nationally accredited 40-hour training program, such as Bridging the Gap or The Community Interpreter, or equivalent (Preferred). If not completed, candidates must be willing to complete the training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to handle stressful situations, and cultural awareness.
  • Flexibility and ability to work outside normal working hours.
  • Pass a background check and health screening.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is $18.00 - $33.00 per hour, depending upon language, experience, and training.
