Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Perfusionist to join our team as an Assistant Chief Perfusionist. This is a leadership role that requires strong clinical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to motivate and guide a team of perfusionists.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and coordination for perioperative patient care in the OR, ensuring that care is delivered in accordance with the institution's philosophy and goals.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Perfusionist and Director of Extracorporeal Services to support unit-based quality and performance improvement activities.
  • Function as a respectful member of the healthcare team, demonstrating knowledge of the organization's Service Standards and incorporating them into daily responsibilities.
  • Assist with compliance with standards and regulations for agencies pertinent to the unit or clinical service.
  • Promote excellent customer service for patients, physicians, and others by ensuring expectations are met or exceeded.
  • Provide input to the Director and Chief for formal performance appraisal for staff assigned to the unit.
  • Guide, develop, and counsel staff regarding practice and performance standards, holding them accountable to institutional and departmental policies/procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate care is delivered for patient age and/or developmental specific needs.
  • Participate in the development, promulgation, and implementation of process standards for the delivery of patient care relevant to the scope of service.
  • Identify, initiate investigation, and proactively respond to potential and/or actual risk management issues.
  • Serve as a role model for staff in considering the needs and behaviors of specific patient age groups and cultures.
  • Assist in facilitating a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal patient care outcomes.
  • Coordinate unit response to emergent patient and unit/clinical service events, communicating quickly with other leadership and response teams.
  • Serve as a support and resource for the education of healthcare providers as opportunities arise.
  • Ensure and participate in providing ongoing staff education consistent with the individual needs of the staff as well as those that impact the department.
  • Facilitate an environment conducive to creativity in practice, collaboration with all members of the health team, and the fostering of collegial relationships.
  • Participate and foster staff involvement in evidence-based practice and other perfusion research efforts.
  • Initiate professional development plans for self to improve and sustain clinical and leadership competencies.
  • Demonstrate awareness and recognition of the clinical plan of care.
  • Ensure pertinent communication of patient care and unit-related issues from perfusion/physician staff are conveyed to the healthcare team.
  • Participate and/or facilitate research protocols applicable to the unit, ensuring knowledge of staff, protecting rights of patients, and participating in assessment/evaluation of outcomes.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of education and development activities in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Provide leadership for coordination of unit activity, serving as a role model and resource during hours of operation.
  • Foster a positive customer service environment that promotes communication and resolution of issues for patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Facilitate attendance and participation by staff in educational offerings.
  • Maintain scheduling and staffing for optimal availability of resources for safe, competent, and effective patient care delivery.
  • Implement performance improvement action plans, collect data, and identify additional opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with others to develop a learning atmosphere that supports education and development of OR staff.
  • Act as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating expertise, critical thinking, and related experience in all aspects of the nursing process in care of patients and families.
  • Support the mission, philosophy, standards, goals, and objectives of the institution, department, and service line.
  • Provide clinical leadership by assessing, implementing, and evaluating the care provided to patients in the Operating Room.
