Job Summary:

NYU Langone Health is seeking a skilled Clinical Perfusionist to join our team. As a Clinical Perfusionist, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and ensuring the safe and effective operation of extracorporeal circuits during cardiac surgery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess and plan patient care requirements and treatment necessary for extra-corporeal services during the entire perioperative period.
  • Monitor physiological parameters for early identification of changes in the patient's physiologic status during procedures.
  • Recognize medical emergencies and respond appropriately by expediting treatments.
  • Perform blood samples for arterial and venous blood gases, Hematocrit, potassium levels, activated clotting time, and provide information on the patient's current status.
  • Assess and communicate the patient's need for blood and/or blood products to the surgeon and complete a blood administration record as per hospital policy and procedure.
  • Review the patient's medical record prior to each procedure and record all pertinent information on the perfusion record.
  • Prepare the extracorporeal circuit in a timely fashion and be prepared to conduct bypass prior to induction on anesthesia.
  • Initiate and operate the heart/lung machine at the direction of the cardiac surgeon in order to achieve extracorporeal perfusion.
  • Adjust and adapt the perfusion system to accommodate changes in surgical technique or patient parameters after communication with the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, family, and coworkers by reporting faulty equipment, clearing access, and maintaining communication.
  • Comply with dress/uniform code of the operating room.
  • Summarize the patient's physiological status in the medical record according to departmental policy.
  • Record all information pertinent to the patient during procedure, i.e., time on bypass, cross clamp, ABG, ACT, Temp, and maintain security in computer entries.
  • Complete order entry as per hospital policy and procedure.
Requirements:
  • BS in basic science, nursing, bio-medical, or bio-clinical engineering or related field.
  • NYSOP Permit in Clinical Perfusion required.
  • Experience in the care of patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics.
  • Knowledge and operating skills of perfusion-related equipment.
  • Ability to collect and understand data, use of outcomes management in daily patient activities.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills in both mechanical and knowledge-related situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Membership in professional organization desirable.
  • American Board of Certified Clinical Perfusionists or board certification eligible.
