Essential Learning Objectives:

  • COLLABORATION: The realm of theater thrives on teamwork. Technical Assistants at Gannon University collaborate closely with the faculty Technical Director to bring to life the visual and auditory elements of the theater's productions. They engage with Directors, Adjunct Faculty, Guest Artists, Student Volunteers, and Community Helpers. The scale and complexity of various scenic and lighting projects require effective collaboration for successful outcomes. Tasks are often segmented into smaller groups based on individual skills and interests, fostering a collective effort towards safety and impactful storytelling.
  • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: A Technical Assistant at Gannon University must communicate clearly and effectively with the Technical Director, faculty, and volunteers to navigate the intricate tasks associated with technical theater production. This communication occurs in formal production meetings, written documentation, promotional content, and visual designs. Continuous informal dialogue among team members and the Technical Director is essential. Technical Assistants will gain confidence in various communication methods, including face-to-face discussions, phone calls, emails, and visual presentations.
  • ANALYTICAL THINKING: Each day at Gannon University's theater presents unique challenges in show production and shop maintenance. Under guidance, Technical Assistants are assigned objectives that allow them the freedom to devise their own methods. As they gain experience, they are entrusted with greater autonomy in decision-making during projects. Engaging in daily tasks requires creativity and problem-solving skills, culminating in a rewarding sense of achievement upon project completion.
  • SUPERVISORY SKILLS: As Technical Assistants advance through their training, they cultivate leadership abilities. The demanding nature of theater work often necessitates the assistance of less experienced student volunteers, whom the Technical Assistants guide. Independence is fostered through the successful execution of increasingly challenging projects. Technical Assistants learn to balance self-sufficiency with the understanding of when to seek guidance from the Technical Director, who may not always be immediately available. This role builds confidence in leadership while emphasizing the importance of collaboration.
  • PROFESSIONAL GROWTH: Technical Assistants at Gannon University gain extensive hands-on experience in Scenery, Costuming, Properties, Lighting, and Sound Technology and Design, surpassing that of other theater students. They receive ongoing training in both group and individual settings, with ample opportunities for practice to hone their skills with specialized tools and materials. Many develop a keen interest in specific areas of technical theater, allowing them to focus their efforts accordingly. This approach nurtures well-rounded theater technicians with distinct areas of expertise, often leading to requests for their services in professional productions.
  • DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: Theater has historically been a sanctuary for those seeking acceptance. Gannon University embraces this tradition, ensuring that Technical Assistants are exposed to and respect a wide array of beliefs, customs, and social norms. The theater's programming often includes thought-provoking material, fostering an environment where everyone feels safe to express their beliefs.

The Technical Assistants play a vital role in collaborating with the faculty Technical Director on the design and construction of the season's productions, special events, and fundraising activities, while also ensuring the smooth operation of the scene shop, costume shop, and storage areas.

Daily responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Painting, Carpentry, Scenery Installation, Moving Scenery, Crafting, Measuring, Sewing, Wig Styling, Costume Maintenance, Climbing, Lifting (up to 50 lbs), Hanging Lights, Programming Lights, Running Cables, Speaker Placement, Running Crew, Box Office, Concessions, Publicity, Administrative Support, Cleaning, Organizing, and Item Delivery.

Whenever feasible, a student's interests in specific areas of technical theater will be prioritized.

Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess a passion for theater and a strong interest in technical theater. A foundational understanding of theater is necessary. This role demands a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a robust work ethic. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working both collaboratively and independently, with flexibility in scheduling for production weekends.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in at least one area of technical theater or successful completion of relevant coursework is preferred.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must be capable of lifting approximately 50 pounds independently and maintain good physical health to operate power tools and a single-person lift.
