The Technical Assistant role at Gannon University is designed to foster essential skills in the realm of theater production. This position emphasizes the following Career Readiness Learning Objectives:
- COLLABORATION: Working in the theater requires a strong sense of teamwork. Technical Assistants collaborate closely with the faculty Technical Director to bring to life the visual and auditory elements of theatrical productions. They engage with Directors, Adjunct Faculty, Guest Artists, Student Volunteers, and Community Volunteers, dividing large tasks into manageable segments based on individual skills and interests to ensure safety and effective storytelling.
- EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: A Technical Assistant must communicate clearly with the Technical Director, faculty, and volunteers to navigate the complexities of technical theater production. This communication occurs through formal meetings, written documentation, promotional content, and visual designs. Informal discussions among team members are also vital for ongoing collaboration.
- PROBLEM-SOLVING: Each day presents unique challenges in the theater environment. Technical Assistants are encouraged to approach these challenges creatively, often working independently under supervision to meet set objectives. As they gain experience, they are entrusted with greater decision-making responsibilities, fostering a sense of ownership and accomplishment.
- LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Through their training, Technical Assistants cultivate leadership skills. The demands of theater production often require guiding less experienced student volunteers, allowing Technical Assistants to enhance their independence and confidence. They learn to balance self-sufficiency with the need for guidance from the Technical Director.
- PROFESSIONAL GROWTH: Technical Assistants at Gannon University gain extensive hands-on experience in various aspects of theater, including Scenery, Costuming, Properties, Lighting, and Sound Technology. They receive continuous training, allowing them to refine their skills and explore specific areas of interest within technical theater.
- DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: The theater serves as a welcoming space for diverse perspectives. Gannon University’s Technical Assistants engage with a variety of beliefs and traditions, fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals feel valued and safe.
The Technical Assistants play a crucial role in supporting the design and construction of theatrical productions, special events, and fundraisers, while also maintaining the operational efficiency of the scene shop, costume shop, and storage areas.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Painting, Carpentry, Scenery Installation, Moving Scenery, Crafting, Measurements, Sewing, Wig Styling, Costume Maintenance, Climbing, Lifting (up to 50 lbs), Lighting Setup, Programming Lights, Running Cables, Speaker Placement, Box Office Operations, Concessions, Publicity, Administrative Support, Cleaning, Organizing, and Item Delivery.
Whenever feasible, students' interests in specific technical theater areas will be prioritized.
Qualifications: Candidates should possess a passion for theater and a keen interest in technical production. A foundational understanding of theater is required, along with a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working both collaboratively and independently, with flexibility in scheduling for production weekends.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in technical theater or completion of an introductory course in Scene Technology is advantageous. Candidates must be physically capable of lifting approximately 50 pounds and be in good health to operate power tools and lifts.
