Position Overview

The Technical Assistants at Gannon University’s theater program play a vital role in the execution of various productions and events. This position is designed to cultivate essential skills in several key areas:

  • COLLABORATION: Working in the theater requires a strong sense of teamwork. Technical Assistants collaborate closely with the faculty Technical Director and other team members to bring productions to life. The nature of the work often involves large-scale projects that necessitate effective division of tasks among team members based on their skills and interests.
  • EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Clear communication is crucial in this role. Technical Assistants must engage with the Technical Director, faculty, and volunteers to navigate the complexities of theater production. This includes participating in formal meetings, creating written documentation, and sharing ideas visually through designs. Regular informal communication is also essential for smooth operations.
  • PROBLEM-SOLVING: Each day presents unique challenges in the theater environment. Technical Assistants are encouraged to think critically and creatively to solve problems that arise during productions. With guidance, they will learn to take ownership of their tasks and develop decision-making skills as they progress.
  • LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: As Technical Assistants gain experience, they will develop leadership qualities by guiding less experienced volunteers. This role fosters independence while teaching the importance of seeking assistance when necessary.
  • PROFESSIONAL GROWTH: Technical Assistants receive extensive hands-on training in various aspects of theater production, including scenery, costuming, lighting, and sound design. This position allows for skill refinement and specialization in areas of interest, preparing them for future opportunities in the field.
  • DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: The theater is a welcoming space for diverse perspectives. Technical Assistants will engage with a variety of beliefs and traditions, contributing to an inclusive environment that values every individual.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, tasks such as painting, carpentry, scenery installation, sewing, lighting programming, and administrative support. Candidates should possess a foundational understanding of theater and a strong desire to learn. Flexibility in scheduling is essential to accommodate production needs.

Qualifications: A passion for theater and a willingness to learn are essential. Previous experience in technical theater is preferred but not required. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and operate tools safely is necessary.
