Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled ECMO Specialist Respiratory Therapist to join our team at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan. As a key member of our respiratory therapy department, you will be responsible for providing critical care to pediatric patients requiring ECMO support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up, troubleshoot, and monitor patients on prolonged life support equipment, including ECMO machines.
  • Prepare the ECMO machine for placement, evaluate and select equipment and supplies, and prime and safety check equipment.
  • Monitor patients receiving ECMO treatment and equipment, adjusting rates of blood and gas flow as needed.
  • Assess patient status, perform trials off ECMO, and maintain departmental patient records.
  • Continuously monitor and interpret alarms and feedback systems from ECMO circuit to maintain optimal functioning.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and maintain and check for optimal functioning through proper servicing, safety checks, quality assurance, and quality control programs.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an AMA/CoARC approved Respiratory Care program and registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Current CHM ECMO certification and licensure to practice as a Respiratory Therapist by the State of Michigan.
  • Two to three years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, with experience in Critical Care preferred.
  • BCLS certification required, ACLS certification preferred, and PALS certification preferred.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Technical skills necessary to operate and monitor ECMO equipment.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with physicians and other medical staff, patients, and families.
  • ECMO background strongly recommended and skills related to the care of critical infants on life support equipment.
  • Ability to transport equipment and supplies, evaluate patient conditions, and operate all respiratory therapy and bedside pulmonary function equipment.
  • Leadership skills, including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability, comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching, teaching, and counseling skills.
