Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States Veolia Environnement SA Full time

Company Overview

Position Overview

As a Chemical Process Specialist, you will collaborate closely with manufacturing facilities, technical teams, global engineering, and regional quality and environmental health and safety (EHS) departments. You will serve as a pivotal contact for the development, implementation, and sustainability of all initiatives related to Veolia's Chemical Manufacturing Services (CMS) within the Water Technologies and Services (WTS) business unit or associated regional operations.

In this essential role, you will provide expert technical guidance, direction, and training to plant personnel and operators on chemical processes and safety protocols, ensuring compliance with operational standards and safety regulations.

You will lead and offer onsite assistance for startup trials of new or enhanced processes, ensure timely troubleshooting support, engage in root cause analysis, and execute corrective and preventive measures. Additionally, you will play a key role in supporting various new business initiatives, optimizing manufacturing processes, and driving cost-reduction strategies while ensuring safe chemical production. If you are passionate about contributing to meaningful work with a company dedicated to creating a cleaner, more sustainable future, this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Global Process Chemistry team in addressing all aspects of process safety in projects and ensuring proper operational procedures are implemented across all reaction and blending plant operations.
  • Maintain global communication to leverage resources from other regions and meet the business needs of a worldwide organization, including technology, manufacturing, sourcing, product quality, business units, and supply chain.
  • Represent Global Process Chemistry in team meetings and projects to ensure that process chemistry and safety requirements are addressed from a regional perspective while aligning with global standards.
  • Support cost-reduction initiatives by evaluating optimal operational strategies, including in-house production versus toll manufacturing.
  • Assist the regional tolling technology transfer leader by compiling and providing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for toll manufacturing, conducting onsite audits for EHS, quality, and engineering, and ensuring the completion of corrective actions. Be an integral part of the qualification team throughout the entire qualification process, offering guidance and support during scale-up trials to ensure safe operations and deliver products that meet quality standards.
  • Collaborate closely with the engineering team during the design and commissioning phases of new engineering projects at Veolia CMS plants, providing technical process support.
  • Compile process safety documentation, including P&IDs, equipment design specifications, and process parameters necessary for the successful execution of Process Hazard Analyses (PHA/HAZOP).
  • Implement the company's internal standards for hazardous processes, including flammable materials, combustible dust handling, and neutralization reactions.
  • Establish, maintain, and enhance all facets of the company's process safety program, ensuring compliance with relevant OSHA, EPA, EU, and local regulations, including Process Safety Management, Risk Management Plan (RMP), and Seveso directives.
  • Drive continuous improvements in systems and processes through digitization and Lean Six Sigma methodologies.

Qualifications

Core Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a scientific discipline, preferably in Organic or Polymer Chemistry, or an equivalent university degree.
  • Comprehensive understanding of chemical plant operations and process safety.
  • Experience in delivering Process Safety training to employees.
  • Proficiency with chemical process instrumentation and WinCC.
  • Promote a culture of process safety compliance within the chemical industry environment.

Additional Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in the chemical industry.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 30 standards, OSHA regulations, Process Safety Management, EPA, and SEVESO regulations.
  • Experience with WinCC or similar software.
  • Knowledge of SAP is advantageous.
  • Experience with Brilliant Fulfillment, Lean Manufacturing, or Six Sigma methodologies.
