Position Overview

The Surgical Instrument Processing Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency of surgical operations by managing the lifecycle of surgical supplies and equipment. This position is essential for ensuring that all instruments, tools, and medical devices are meticulously handled, sterilized, and prepared for use in various healthcare settings, including operating rooms and clinics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals and support staff to uphold the values of the institution.
  • Provide respectful and compassionate care to patients and their families, ensuring their preferences and cultural beliefs are acknowledged.
  • Engage with the interprofessional team to facilitate effective communication and support for patients and their families.
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, prepare, assemble, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments and trays in accordance with established protocols and safety standards.
  • Prepare surgical case carts as per departmental requirements.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, including automated washers and sterilizers, adhering to manufacturer guidelines and departmental policies.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of instruments to ensure they meet safety and cleanliness standards prior to sterilization.
  • Verify the effectiveness of sterilization processes through quality indicators.
  • Report any malfunctions or issues with sterilization equipment to the appropriate supervisory personnel.
  • Utilize an Instrument Tracking System to manage the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical items, ensuring accurate inventory and documentation.
  • Label all items clearly with identification and expiration dates.
  • Regularly check for expired items and ensure the integrity of sterilized products, replacing or reporting as necessary.
  • May assist in the maintenance and distribution of durable medical equipment as required.
  • Participate in on-call duties during off-hours and holidays as needed.
  • Engage in the orientation and training of new staff members.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a certified sterile processing technician training program is mandatory.

Experience:

A minimum of six months of relevant experience is preferred.

Certifications:

Certification as a sterile processing technician is required and must be maintained.

Employment Conditions:

Compliance with vaccination requirements is necessary for employment in clinical settings.
