Surgical Technologist

As a Surgical Technologist at Geisinger Healthplex State College, you will assist surgeons with procedures related to patient care during surgical interventions. This role requires a strong understanding of aseptic techniques, patient assistance, and coordination with other disciplines.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the coordination of treatments with other disciplines.
Provide basic patient assistance, including connecting patients to clinical equipment as needed.
Practice aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery, including scrubbing, applying surgical gowns, gloving, draping, and setting up instrument tables.
Participate in surgical time-outs and operating room briefings according to universal protocols.
Identify correct surgical sites with the circulating registered nurse and surgeon before incisions.
Maintain accurate accounts of supplies, including sponges, needles, and instruments, and verify counts with the circulating nurse at the end of procedures.
Prepare, identify, and verify all specimens obtained during surgical procedures.
Dispose of linens, needles, and sharps in appropriate containers.
Assess wounds and apply or change sterile dressings as instructed by registered nurses.
Maintain and document universal precautions, initiate emergency procedures, and participate in admission and discharge processes.
Perform billing as appropriate for services rendered or equipment used, and participate in on-call rotations of the operating room.
Act as a preceptor for students assigned to the surgical unit and adhere to all policies, protocols, and standards of care.
Perform quality control monitoring and additional duties, including specimen collection, pleure-vac setup, patient transport, and post-mortem care, under the supervision of registered nurses.
Requirements:
Graduate from a Specialty Training Program.
Minimum of 1 year of related work experience.
Certification(s) and License(s) as required by the position.
Work Environment:
This role is typically performed in a clinical environment, and you will be accountable for satisfying all job-specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.
