Job OverviewPosition Summary:

Under the guidance of the management team, the Animal Care Specialist is responsible for delivering exceptional care to ensure the well-being of animals at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center. This role involves fostering a safe and nurturing environment for all animals by observing their behavior, ensuring cleanliness in their living spaces, and facilitating regular exercise and social interaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Uphold a high standard of animal care and welfare, which encompasses providing timely feedings, administering medications, ensuring access to clean water, and offering appropriate bedding and enrichment activities.
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect kennels, rooms, cages, and equipment as assigned, adhering to St. Hubert's established protocols.
  • Groom or clean animals regularly or as needed to maintain hygiene.
  • Engage in regular exercise and socialization with animals, following St. Hubert's walking policies.
  • Monitor and document any unusual behaviors, signs of illness, or injuries in animals on a daily basis.
  • Relay important information to the medical, behavioral, and adoption teams as necessary.
  • Safely handle and restrain animals, including those that are ill, injured, or aggressive.
  • Ensure all animal care areas are adequately stocked for daily operations.
  • Maintain cleanliness in all animal-related areas, including hallways and outdoor spaces.
  • Manage daily laundry tasks, including washing, folding, and organizing.
  • Conduct tours for the public regarding lost and found animals.
  • Be knowledgeable about St. Hubert's policies and animal welfare practices.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to all individuals utilizing St. Hubert's services.
  • Collaborate effectively with volunteers and partners.
  • Represent St. Hubert's with professionalism and courtesy, recognizing the contributions of the public, volunteers, and staff to the organization's success.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • A genuine love for animals and the ability to interact with them in a calm and gentle manner.
  • Capability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact positively with colleagues and community members from diverse backgrounds, maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
  • Reliability, integrity, and punctuality are essential.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow directions in a team setting.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • A passion for St. Hubert's mission and a commitment to caring for all animals, while educating the public without bias.


Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to various conditions typical of animal shelter work, including interactions with deceased or aggressive animals, allergens, and extreme temperatures.

Education and Experience:

  • At least one year of experience in animal care, which may include personal pet care.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
