Position Duties

This is an ongoing recruitment announcement. Applications will be accepted continuously, and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies arise. Located in a prominent area, the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center serves as a tertiary care teaching facility, delivering top-tier healthcare to over 75,000 Veterans along the regional coast. The center is recognized as one of the fastest-growing VA facilities in the U.S. in terms of patient volume. Over the past few years, it has consistently achieved a 5-Star rating for quality and efficiency, the highest accolade according to VA's Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning Value (SAIL) model. The facility comprises a 152-bed hospital, six outpatient clinics, a nursing home, women's health services, and a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient care, including Medical and Surgical Intensive Care. Annually, the center facilitates over 934,000 outpatient visits and approximately 4,300 inpatient admissions. Compensation: Competitive salary, annual performance bonuses, and regular salary increments.

Leave Benefits: 50-55 days of paid time off annually (including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and a potential 5-day paid absence for Continuing Medical Education).

Retirement Benefits: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with contributions up to 5% by the VA.

Insurance: Comprehensive federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many federal insurance programs can extend into retirement).

Licensure: A full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. State or territory is required.

Continuing Medical Education: Potential reimbursement of $1,000 per year (must be a full-time employee with board certification).

Contractual Obligations: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (subject to change based on agency needs).

Primary Care Provider Responsibilities:
  1. Conducts and documents comprehensive history and physical examinations, recording data from patient visits.
  2. Evaluates, consults, formulates diagnoses, and manages the primary care panel of assigned patients.
  3. Documents progress notes in the electronic medical record and completes workload documentation promptly.
  4. Delivers medical care addressing both acute and chronic conditions, along with preventive care for male and female veterans.
  5. Orders diagnostic tests, medications, and laboratory tests as clinically appropriate for each patient.
  6. Ensures timely follow-up on results and patient inquiries, including completion of view alerts, secure messages, and other patient communications.
  7. Assesses medical conditions and formulates treatment plans adhering to accepted protocols.
  8. Prescribes medications in accordance with approved formularies and federal and state regulations.
  9. Educates patients about their medical conditions and recommended treatments, covering topics such as nutritional counseling, smoking cessation, immunizations, health screenings, and disease management.
  10. Consults with other specialties as necessary, following service agreements.
  11. May be required to provide care for female patients as part of ongoing duties, including potential designation as a Women's Health Provider.
Employment Conditions

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional criteria specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensure may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the qualifications under the previous standard at the time of their initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license to practice in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
