The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is dedicated to fostering a secure and protected atmosphere at Princeton University. Operating continuously throughout the year, DPS comprises a team of 111 professionals, including university police, security personnel, dispatchers, and administrative staff committed to delivering exceptional service to the community.
DPS has achieved Law Enforcement Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), reflecting its adherence to high standards of public safety and operational excellence.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Security Operations Manager (SOM) or the Assistant Security Operations Manager (ASOM), the Chief Security Supervisor for Art Museum Operations (CSSAMO) oversees a team of 5 Cultural Property Security Supervisors (CPSS) managing 58 security officers.
The CSSAMO is responsible for scheduling, training, and supervising staff to ensure the security of the Princeton University Art Museum and its collections, while also ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for visitors during open hours and special events. This role is pivotal in providing daily oversight of the museum's security operations and enhancing the visitor experience.
This position involves guiding and monitoring the assignments of security personnel, providing necessary training, and establishing protocols for the control room operations. Responsibilities include monitoring alarms, managing visitor access, and coordinating with DPS staff for various operational functions. The CSSAMO plays a crucial role in ensuring that all visitors feel secure and valued during their time at the museum.
The CSSAMO collaborates closely with the SOM/ASOM to develop staffing and training strategies that align with institutional objectives, optimizing the use of personnel, technology, and resources.
Key Responsibilities:
Patrol Operations (30%)
- Exercise command over museum security personnel, ensuring adherence to guidelines established by senior public safety officials.
- Supervise security staff, implementing policies for a 24/7 operational framework.
- Conduct daily briefings and debriefings for security personnel.
- Organize and prioritize operational resources to meet departmental goals.
- Review daily operations to ensure compliance with security policies.
- Coordinate with DPS for administrative functions such as payroll and training.
- Consult with senior management regarding public safety operations and special events.
- Manage overtime assignments for museum operations.
- Conduct regular inspections of museum facilities to identify safety hazards.
- Advise museum administration on security matters.
- Schedule personnel assignments based on operational needs.
- Review and coordinate incident reports.
- Participate in recruitment and selection processes for security staff.
- Monitor performance and conduct annual evaluations of security officers.
Staff Development & Performance Management (20%)
- Assess staff performance and collaborate with CPSS and SOM/ASOM to develop training programs.
- Provide leadership in creating a secure environment for museum operations.
- Supervise and train employees effectively.
- Assist with onboarding and training for new security staff.
- Work with museum staff to foster positive community relations.
- Document misconduct and recommend actions as necessary.
Administrative Duties (15%)
- Act as a liaison with various campus stakeholders.
- Manage the museum access database.
- Oversee time collection and payroll coordination.
- Notify facilities management of repair needs.
Event Management (15%)
- Engage in event planning and staffing as part of the museum's Events Team.
- Coordinate parking assistance for events.
- Manage security for museum events, ensuring a balance between safety and customer service.
Control Room Management (10%)
- Supervise all control room activities.
- Enforce visitor access and key control policies.
- Monitor museum alarm systems and camera feeds.
- Coordinate dispatching with DPS communication centers.
Emergency Response (5%)
- Participate in the museum's Risk Management Committee.
- Support after-hours emergency communications.
- Respond to security and fire incidents as needed.
Additional Responsibilities (5%)
Perform other duties as assigned by the SOM/ASOM.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 3-5 years of relevant security experience, preferably in a museum or educational setting.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Active listening and relationship-building abilities.
- High emotional intelligence and strategic thinking capabilities.
- Effective time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
