Job Summary

The Director of Board Relations is responsible for developing and managing the comprehensive strategy for Wharton School's executive boards, both internally and externally. This role is responsible for all aspects of the process, from identification and pipeline management to onboarding new members. Additionally, they will lead a cross-functional team to execute the program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the development team to ensure continued philanthropy by board members, including direct solicitation for the Wharton Fund to maintain consistent annual fund giving by all current board members and involvement in solicitation for restricted gifts, as appropriate.
  • Work directly with board chairs, faculty, senior school administrators, and others to develop agendas for board and committee meetings, building relationships that connect board members with the school.
  • Develop a board communications strategy around the lifecycle of a board member, producing and conducting new member onboarding and orientation, including oversight of vanity accounts for board chairs and other types of board communication.
  • Maintain official documents for the Board, including membership, and assure board roles and responsibilities are aligned with the guidelines of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, working with the development team on membership pipeline and board expectations.
  • Maintain the board pipeline both in Compass and through conversations with prospect managers across Wharton and Penn, preparing reports on all aspects of board composition and aligning prospective members with school priorities.
  • Ensure effective University and School board volunteer leadership.
  • Provide high-touch and quality board engagement through effective meeting planning and communication.
  • Assist in increasing diverse and robust philanthropic relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree a plus, with years of previous successful experience in development or other external role in an international academic or other non-profit environment required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to function with a high degree of independence with assigned group of prospects, yet interact with colleagues in a centralized framework for fundraising and engagement, participating and contributing to a total team effort.
  • Ability to interact with faculty, CEO-level contacts, and perform as a senior administrator of the School.
  • Strong communications skills, especially in cross-cultural settings.
  • Excellent planning, organizational skills, managing multiple issues and projects simultaneously and creatively, thoroughly, and confidentially, working independently and under pressure, being comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Domestic and some international travel required, with a valid passport from the country of citizenship and a valid driver's license.
  • Competency with standard software applications, with a thorough understanding of the University environment and academic mission, comfort with diversity in all forms, with different cultural values and norms, understanding of international issues that affect American higher education, and a sense of humor, optimistic outlook, and resiliency.
