Position Summary:

This role involves semi-skilled work focused on the operation of light construction machinery within the Solid Waste Department.

Key Responsibilities:

The following duties outline the primary functions of this position, though additional tasks may be assigned as necessary:

  • Operate and maintain light landfill machinery, including but not limited to articulating trucks, water trucks, tractors, and all-terrain vehicles.
  • Occasionally handle gasoline-powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and compressors.
  • May temporarily operate heavier machinery in emergency situations or for training purposes.
  • Perform routine manual labor tasks as directed.
  • Conduct cleaning and maintenance on all equipment utilized.
  • Inspect incoming loads for prohibited refuse items.
  • Inform the public about restricted debris and provide guidance on proper disposal methods.
  • Operate light automotive and landscaping equipment as necessary.
  • Work at various locations as designated by the Landfill Manager.
  • Document daily activities, vehicle inspections, and load assessments.
  • Handle and store Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), used oil, and E-waste appropriately.
  • Check loads of recycling products, HHW, and E-Waste.
  • Coordinate schedules and prepare documentation for recyclable materials and HHW transportation.
  • Maintain logs and submit reports for regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure a professional and safe work environment in accordance with established safety protocols.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures consistently.
  • Adapt positively to changes and perform other related tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Applicants should possess:

  • Understanding of the operation and maintenance of landfill light equipment.
  • Basic skills in operating construction machinery.
  • Awareness of safety hazards associated with landfill operations.
  • Ability to obtain necessary certifications related to HHW and landfill operations.
  • Knowledge of the risks involved in handling HHW, oil, and E-Waste.
  • Effective communication skills for both oral and written instructions.
  • Capability to maintain professional relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Familiarity with regulations regarding solid waste disposal.
  • Ability to operate light and landscaping equipment as required.
  • Skills in managing interactions with the public, including challenging situations.
  • Competence in navigating rough terrain while operating equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of:

  • Remaining stationary for a portion of the workday.
  • Operating various types of equipment and tools.
  • Communicating effectively with the public and team members.
  • Ascending and descending stairs and ladders.
  • Occasionally lifting materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Working outdoors for extended periods.
  • Performing maintenance tasks in confined spaces.
  • Working in rugged terrain with varying conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred, along with at least one year of experience in operating and maintaining construction equipment.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must hold a valid Florida Commercial Driving License, Class B or higher, or be able to obtain one within six months of employment.

Other Requirements:

This position is designated as Disaster Essential.
