The Clinical Lab Assistant- Phlebotomist is a key member of our team, responsible for performing phlebotomy and other laboratory procedures with minimal supervision. This role requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Essential Functions- Perform phlebotomy and other laboratory procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Collect and process blood samples for testing, including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
- Operate laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, microscopes, and automated analyzers.
- Maintain accurate records and reports, including patient information and test results.
- Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff.
- Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing and instrument maintenance.
- Assist with training and competency assessments for new staff members.
The Clinical Lab Assistant- Phlebotomist will have demonstrated proficiency and experience in the following modalities:
- General Phlebotomy (ages 10 and above)
- Special Collections and/or external shipping certification
- Assisting provider-performed procedures, including FNA, Bone Marrow, EBUS, and Bronchial lavage
- Specimen Processing, including Specimen receipt, sorting, delivery/loading, decanting, and retrieval for send-out testing and surgical sample triage
- Non-conformity investigation/problem resolution, including proper documentation
- Lab Equipment Maintenance and/or support, including chemical and biohazard waste management for non-testing instrumentation
- Sample Testing (waived to moderate), including instrument maintenance, biohazard disposal, and QC
- BB-Product prep, including irradiating units, thawing cryo and plasma, splitting plasma and platelets
- Infectious Disease, including planting patient specimens, tissue and bone processing, plate inoculation, and knowledge of anaerobic versus aerobic incubation requirements
- Genetics and Cytometry, including nucleic acid extraction, cell culture and harvesting, renal transplant kit oversight, and patient testing scheduling and monitoring
- Histology and Cytology, including cytology specimen processing, slide preparation and staining, histology specimen processing, including bone marrow grossing and knowledge of processing for each tissue type
- TRI Honest Broker, including department-specific clerical or support functions
- Cryo, plasma, platelet, bone, and tissue
- Ordering, receiving, monitoring par levels, end-of-month reconciliations, including blood supply, reagents, supplies, and TriBuy training and competency
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated schooling or experience in general phlebotomy to be hired as a Level 1 or higher
- Candidates with no training or experience may be considered for an apprenticeship
- PBT (ASCP) or equivalent certification
- Completion of a relevant Clinical Lab Assistant or comparable program
- Prove immunity to Hepatitis B, or be immunized, or sign a waiver refusing Hepatitis immunization
- Provide documentation of a PPD test conducted not more than 90 days prior to date of hire, or have a PPD test conducted through TriCore
- Valid driver's license
- Good driving record
- Must be insurable by lab insurance carrier as required by location
- Eligible to work in a healthcare facility as provided by the New Mexico Caregivers Criminal History Screening Act or other applicable law
