Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sterile Processing Department Manager to oversee the daily operations of our Sterile Processing department. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing services and departments in providing patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation reprocessing functions, including collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and distribution. Additionally, they will manage the surgical instrument inventory and supplies supporting departmental activities, serve as a subject matter expert and resource for product reprocessing needs, and develop and ensure compliance with departmental budget.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise SPD technicians and SPD staff to achieve established operational performance and quality goals.
  • Manage all collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, distribution, and inventory management.
  • Maintain continued education and proficiency in the field of Sterile Processing operations and equipment through education, literature, and seminars.
  • Serve as a technical expert regarding product reprocessing, decontamination, and sterilization for the facility.
  • Demonstrate correct department processes and procedures to staff.
  • Ensure optimal sterile processing performance through quality control and quality assurance of all Sterile Processing activities and equipment.
  • Monitor and report equipment operational status.
  • Recommend equipment changes, upgrades, and additions to meet manufacturers' instructions for use (IFU) for all items processed.
  • Assure departmental standards of operation and policies are in compliance with regulatory and professional agencies, including but not limited to CMS, TJC, AAMI, AORN, and APIC.
  • Facilitate the recruitment and selection of department staff.
  • Provide staff with ongoing feedback and document appropriately, including performance evaluations.
  • Develop a comprehensive departmental orientation for new staff.
  • Routinely coordinate training and competency validation for all.
  • Ensure staff work is performed within prescribed technical and safety standards.
  • Provide or coordinate instructions and in-service on new products, procedures, and equipment to identify and prevent resource loss and maintain patient and staff safety.
  • Ensure staff attend technical and mandatory training/education.
  • Schedule staff and work to ensure cases have instruments and equipment when needed.
  • Monitor and adhere to labor and expense budgets.
  • Maintain reports in appropriate cycles for department performance and staff attendance.
  • Develop and submit department budget to the Director of Perioperative Services.
  • Responsible for maintaining fiscally responsible practices and meets budget expectations.
  • In collaboration with Facilities Maintenance Department, establish a preventive maintenance program for Sterile Processing equipment.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of equipment to meet Medical Center requirements.
  • Provide ongoing and effective communication with physicians, hospital/clinic department management, staff, and vendor representatives.
  • Represent department/Surgical Services by attending appropriate department, facility, and regional meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum Three (3) years experience in an acute or ambulatory-care sterile processing department.
  • Minimum One (1) or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Minimum One (1) or more years experience in preparing for local, state, and/or federal survey and/or The Joint Commission.

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in Business, Manufacturing, Health Care Administration, Public Health, Health Sciences; OR five (5) years of experience in an acute or ambulatory care sterile processing department and two (2) years of supervisory experience.

License, Certification, Registration:

  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution - Technician Certification OR Registered Central Service Technician Certificate.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Leadership Certification (CHL).
  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS).
  • Five (5) years experience in an acute-care sterile processing department.
  • Three (3) years progressive supervisory experience.
  • One (1) year or more supervisory experience in a union environment.
