Position Overview

Role Responsibilities

The FOIL Unit handles a significant volume of records requests annually, necessitating timely and thorough responses. The ideal candidate will:

  • Review and respond to Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests that involve extensive documentation.
  • Conduct searches across various electronic databases, physical records, and other data sources.
  • Provide detailed responses to FOIL inquiries, including identifying applicable exemptions and redacting sensitive information from documents.
  • Manage phone communications with both public and private entities, tracking the status of requests and conveying results to the public.
  • Perform administrative duties related to FOIL requests, such as acknowledging incoming requests within the legally mandated timeframe and entering requests received via mail into the citywide Open Records Portal.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this position, candidates must be:

  • Currently serving in the title of Clerical Associate.
  • Reachable on the Clerical Associate Civil Service List.
  • Eligible under the 55A Program.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A four-year high school diploma or its equivalent, recognized by a State's department of education or an accredited organization.
  • At least one year of relevant clerical experience.

Skills Required

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding, with a minimum typing speed of 100 keystrokes (20 words) per minute.
