Role Responsibilities

The Kidney Nutrition Specialist is tasked with delivering medical nutrition therapy to patients with renal conditions and advocating for healthy dietary practices to prevent and manage kidney disease.

The specialist utilizes their expertise to offer sound nutritional guidance and assess dietary interventions for kidney health.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Evaluating nutritional requirements, dietary limitations, and existing health plans to formulate and execute dietary care strategies and provide nutritional counseling.
  • Collaborating with physicians and healthcare professionals to ascertain patients' nutritional needs and dietary constraints.
  • Working alongside primary care providers, nephrologists, and dialysis centers to create a cohesive dietary care plan and secure IDPN when necessary.
  • Educating patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary strategies, and food selection and preparation.
  • Guiding individuals and groups on fundamental nutrition guidelines, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to enhance their quality of life.
  • Assisting in the development of renal-friendly recipes for patients and caregivers to support adherence to dietary prescriptions.
  • Participating in educational shopping excursions with patients and caregivers to help them navigate dietary restrictions and identify optimal food choices.
  • Helping patients and caregivers locate renal-friendly food sources, especially in food deserts or when facing financial constraints.
  • Conducting in-home assessments and face-to-face consultations as needed (up to 50% same-day travel may be required).


Success Metrics

Engagement and education of patients will be key indicators of success in this role.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelor's degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, food service systems management, or related health fields.
  • Registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Licensure in Nutrition/Dietetics as mandated by the applicable state.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a hospital or dialysis setting.
  • Knowledge of dietary practices, regulations, and guidelines governing dietary functions.
  • Leadership capabilities and a collaborative spirit to work effectively with others.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, implement, and interpret programs and policies.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, electronic medical records, and laboratory data systems.
  • Reliable transportation for up to 50% same-day travel to meet with clients.
