About the Role

Key Responsibilities
  • Referral Underwriter for a geographic book of business
  • Analyze geographic and individual book on a quarterly basis for potential action, identifying quality management concerns and addressing them appropriately
  • Expertly apply all applicable underwriting guidelines when making decisions
  • Capable of underwriting highly complex business with limited support from leadership and infrequent referral activity
  • Broker Management, including creating and executing strategies for new business growth and renewal retention
  • Act as a trusted advisor and solution provider to brokers
  • Partner with E&S Binding Underwriting & Sales leadership to identify trends and recommend enhancements for increased profitable growth
  • Up to 25% travel within the territory
  • Coach and mentor new hires
  • Involved in sales and underwriting training and upskilling of the E&S team
  • Act as a role model and informal leader on the team
  • Provide referral and workload support where needed
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 3+ years of commercial underwriting experience, with excess and surplus experience preferred
  • Experience working with wholesale insurance brokers preferred
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with internal and external business partners
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations, and propose solutions
  • High energy self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills
  • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win
  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills
Location

This role will have a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in one of the following office locations 3 days a week: San Antonio, TX; Charlotte, NC; Hartford, CT; Scottsdale, AZ

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency, and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is: $81,840 - $100,000
