Huntsville, Alabama, United States Draper Labs Full time

Overview:
Draper is a nonprofit research and development organization located in Cambridge, MA. With over 2,000 dedicated employees, Draper addresses significant national challenges by delivering effective and practical solutions. Our work spans various fields, including military defense, space exploration, and biomedical engineering, where the outcomes of our projects can have critical implications.

Our diverse teams of engineers and scientists collaborate in an environment that fosters the exchange of ideas essential for genuine innovation.

Job Summary:
A Radiation Effects Engineer (PMTS) evaluates and mitigates the influence of radiation on system performance.

This evaluation may involve analyzing environments, assessing the transport of these environments through system enclosures, modeling radiation interactions with components and sensors, or conducting tests on these components and sensors.

Typical systems and components include inertial navigation systems, inertial sensors (such as accelerometers and gyroscopes), MEMS devices, ASICs, fiber optics, and various electronic components.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide engineering support based on the effects of radiation on overall system functionality.
  • Design, harden, and validate system performance against various radiation effects, including dose rate, total ionizing dose (TID), neutron displacement damage (NDD), and single event effects (SEE).
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure radiation hardening is upheld throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Independently address complex challenges by developing requirements, proposing solutions when customer specifications are vague or incomplete, and adapting to changes in requirements.
  • Maintain a consistent record of successful task leadership, identifying risks and formulating and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead medium-sized teams (5-10 members), aligning team efforts with program objectives and fostering trust within the group.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) capable of performing advanced radiation effects analyses.
  • Offer insights and recommend design modifications based on analytical results, applying analytical techniques across various technical challenges and disciplines.
  • Identify technical risks at the program/system level and develop and execute strategies to mitigate them.
  • Create, document, and impart best practices to junior engineers.
  • Exhibit strong organizational, planning, and time management skills to meet program objectives.
  • Actively mentor others, recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, and providing constructive feedback.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members, program leadership, and non-technical personnel.
  • Strong analytical skills to support modeling and analysis tasks.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in planning critical testing and analysis activities.
  • Robust analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • A team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can manage multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Solid understanding of radiation interactions with materials and devices.
Education:
A Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field is required. A Master's degree or PhD is preferred.

Experience:
7-10 years of experience in Radiation Engineering or a related field.

Additional Information:

The Contested Environments System Analysis group is looking for a Principal Radiation Effects Engineer to conduct hostile and natural space radiation analysis in support of national defense initiatives.

The Principal Radiation Effects Engineer will act as a liaison between Draper and government agencies, necessitating substantial experience in managing client interactions.

Candidates should possess experience in defining radiation environments, understanding the effects of radiation on electronic systems, and conducting survival probability analyses.

Collaboration across multiple teams, including engineers from various disciplines and locations, is essential. A solid grasp of the Systems Engineering process, electrical design, and missile/interceptor analysis is crucial for this role.

Required Skills:
  • Extensive experience assessing electronic systems for vulnerabilities to radiation effects, including single event effects and dose rate impacts.
  • Proficiency in radiation hardening design, testing, and qualification, with knowledge of part-level and board-level radiation testing across various environments.
  • Ability to define radiation environments based on trajectory and engagement scenarios.
  • Capability to generate Failure Mode Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Single Event Effects Criticality Analysis (SEECA) for existing designs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with radiation transport tools such as MCNP.
  • Knowledge of environment definition tools like ASSIST, FAB4DA, and SPIET-D.
  • Experience conducting Probability of Success (Ps) analysis for components, including the use of Weibull curves for SEE.
  • Technical background and experience with other federally funded research and development centers.

Applicants selected for this position will be required to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
