Job Summary

The Estuary Transit District is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of its vehicle and facilities maintenance department. This is a critical role that requires strong leadership and management skills, as well as a deep understanding of fleet maintenance and operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and administer all aspects of vehicle and facilities maintenance, including fleets located in multiple locations and five facilities.
  • Assign, direct, and evaluate the work activities of all subordinates, including training and problem resolution.
  • Provide leadership and motivation to employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Establish and maintain a good system for maintaining vehicles and facilities.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train employees engaged in maintenance work.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications and standards.
  • Appraise performance of work completed by employees engaged in maintenance work.
  • Oversee safety in the shop.
  • Work with the executive director to requisition needed tools, equipment, diagnostic software, and supplies.
  • Assist in procurement of vehicles and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule to meet the manufacturer's schedule, ensuring that the fleet is maintained to a State of Good Repair.
  • Correspond with outside maintenance shops to coordinate maintenance to vehicles that cannot be done on-site.
  • Perform routine inspections of facilities to ensure state of good repair.
  • Procure and work with vendors to repair and perform routine maintenance to facilities.
  • Ensure that all proper repair orders are maintained, as well as other necessary paperwork.
  • Assist Executive Director and Finance Director with budgeting for maintenance activities.
  • Assist with or perform preventative maintenance, bus fueling, checking fluid levels, road calls, and major and/or routine maintenance as needed.
  • Write routine reports and repair notes, including, but not limited to, work orders, timesheets, incident reports, and warrant reimbursement forms.
  • Maintain efficient and accurate inventory of parts, supplies, fuel, and lubricants needed in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and shop equipment.
  • Oversee fueling and cleaning operations and staff over multiple sites.
  • Communicate availability of vehicles to the operations department.
  • Track and report weekly all maintenance issues and potential risks to the executive director.
  • Review EDVIRs for accurateness and address any issues annotated.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance information in fleet management software.
  • Implement and maintain maintenance staff operations and procedures manual and trainings.
  • Prioritize work so as to minimize interruption to bus schedules and routes.
  • Research technical advances and recommend upgrades as technology advances.
  • In cooperation with the Executive Director, work to develop, report on, and meet key performance indicator targets.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma.
  • One year certificate from college or technical school.
  • Eight years or related work experience and/or training.
  • Five years of hands-on mechanical supervisory experience, including budgeting, cost control, and inventory management.
  • Good written and oral communications skills.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or to small groups.
  • Good organizational skills with attention to timeliness and details.
  • Completed ASE Transit Bus tests H1 through H8 is preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
  • Ability to pass a CDL physical and FTA drug and alcohol test.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL with P and F endorsements.
  • Position is subject to pre-employment, random, and other drug and alcohol testing.
Language Ability

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Math Ability

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, etc.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Computer Skills

Considerable ability to use a personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheets, internet software, email, MS Office, and/or comparable productivity software. Experience with RTA fleet maintenance software preferred.
