GENERAL OVERVIEW

Under the guidance of the school administrator, this role involves working closely with students with disabilities, providing essential physical assistance and emotional support to help them fully engage in the district's special education offerings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist students with physical tasks, reinforcing educational content.
  • Support students in activities such as dressing, transitioning between rooms, using restrooms, and other self-care or classroom needs, while supervising them outside the classroom as required.
  • Work with small groups to reinforce concepts introduced by teaching staff, under the direction of the special education instructor.
  • Establish supportive relationships with students while maintaining communication with teaching staff regarding student progress and performance.
  • Operate and maintain various instructional equipment.
  • Help create and sustain a conducive classroom environment, assisting the teacher in developing and implementing tailored strategies for reinforcing material based on individual student needs and abilities.
  • Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, recreational periods, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Act as the primary resource for any substitute teacher in the absence of the Special Education instructor.
  • Assist in the collection and distribution of instructional materials and maintain student records and documentation.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work environment is primarily indoors but may include outdoor responsibilities, with moderate noise levels and potential exposure to varying weather conditions. The role requires moderate physical exertion, including the ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

The following physical and mental abilities are necessary to perform essential job functions: prolonged standing and sitting, repetitive hand and wrist movements, lifting and moving with force, visual identification of colors and objects, effective communication, and logical decision-making.
