As a Communications Consultant, you will play a pivotal role within the Cancer Center.
Role Overview
Under the supervision of the Cancer Center's Director of Communications, and in collaboration with the MCW Office of Communications, this position is tasked with formulating and executing communication strategies. This includes the creation and dissemination of content across the Center's internal, external, and social media platforms. The Communications Consultant will work closely with team members to develop the Cancer Code newsletters, support key communication initiatives and events, manage web content, analyze metrics and engagement trends, and refine presentation materials. Additionally, this role will involve participation in special projects aimed at enhancing skills and advancing professional development in healthcare marketing communications.
This position requires active participation in weekly editorial planning sessions, contributing story ideas that align with the Cancer Center's Strategic Plan, focusing on the advancement of cancer research and innovation at MCW. Responsibilities include following up on internal news inquiries and promising story leads, gathering data, context, and information to inform messaging and editorial decisions. The Communications Consultant will also be instrumental in enhancing content and engagement strategies for the digital ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Identify and craft narratives that highlight the mission, vision, culture, and priorities of the MCW Cancer Center, in collaboration with the communications team and the MCW Office of Communications. Write, edit, and produce content for newsletters, intranet and external websites, publications, and social media, under the guidance of the current editor, ensuring approval from key stakeholders. Manage and update internal and external websites, including the intranet and MCW Cancer Center Website. Develop and implement communication strategies and content campaigns for various initiatives and projects. Work autonomously to gather information from leaders; consult on communication strategies; write and edit for engagement; and ensure messaging aligns with institutional values and strategic goals. Maintain distribution lists, oversee the publishing process for Cancer Center newsletters, and manage daily updates to the intranet and external websites. Collect, analyze, and share communications data, reporting progress to department stakeholders, including the Director of Cancer Center Communications and other senior leaders. Ensure that all projects and deliverables are of high quality, completed punctually, and reflect input from designated reviewers. Ensure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A strong portfolio of writing and editing work, including digital content and social media. Ability to create messages that are clear, actionable, and relatable to diverse audiences. Understanding of content strategy and effective audience targeting. Strategic thinking in the use of communication channels and tactics. Proficiency in interpreting and simplifying complex subjects. Interest in analyzing and reporting on marketing communications data and outcomes. Familiarity with basic communication and change management principles. A self-directed work ethic, with the ability to focus, meet competing deadlines, and maintain attention to detail. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to collaborate effectively. Experience with Microsoft Office programs and the ability to create impactful PowerPoint presentations; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is preferred but not required.
