Job Overview

Position: Substance Abuse Counselor (LCADC/CAC-AD/CSC-AD) - Starting Salary: $60K or $29/hr

I. Purpose of the Role

Under the guidance of the Clinical Director, the Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for conducting assessments, providing education, and offering counseling services related to substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health issues, and strategies for preventing relapse. This role involves aligning individuals with suitable treatment options identified during initial and subsequent evaluations. The counselor will work collaboratively with the consumer's psychiatrist, therapist, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a comprehensive treatment plan.

II. Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct thorough assessments of clients' substance use histories, ensuring compliance with treatment standards by delivering accurate diagnoses and determining appropriate levels of care. Develop personalized treatment plans in accordance with ASAM criteria.
  2. Engage in case management, set treatment objectives, and collaborate with various stakeholders including physicians, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, correctional staff, and social services to address the needs of consumers while adhering to HIPAA confidentiality regulations.
  3. Implement evidence-based practices that fulfill regulatory agency requirements during individual and group counseling sessions, as well as provide education on addiction and mental health in line with CARF/COMAR standards.
  4. Maintain accurate documentation of treatment services, discharge plans, client progress, and responses to interventions, ensuring compliance with COMAR and CARF record-keeping standards.
  5. Formulate and document treatment strategies based on consumer assessments, promote client engagement, and ensure timely clinical information is available from intake through discharge, while making necessary referrals to guarantee continuity of care.
  6. Secure timely authorization from Optum Maryland for consumer services and provide documentation as needed.
  7. Manage a caseload that may include complex cases requiring intensive services, with weekly supervision to facilitate team collaboration and mandatory team meetings.
  8. Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Clinical Director.

III. Physical Requirements

This role requires the ability to facilitate group sessions and presentations, which may involve frequent standing, walking, and the use of hands and arms.

IV. Work Schedule

This is a full-time position with operational hours from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flexible scheduling options may be available, and weekend work is not required.

V. Travel Requirements

Minimal to no travel is expected for this position.

VI. Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field is required, along with knowledge of chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, crisis intervention techniques, and counseling methodologies.
  • Familiarity with community resources and the ability to effectively plan and organize to address placement and liaison issues, typically gained through relevant work experience.
  • Must hold and maintain certification as an LCADC, CSC-AD, CAC-AD, or equivalent licensure, including CPR and First Aid certifications in the State of Maryland.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication during therapy and instruction, as well as for liaising with consumers, families, staff, and a diverse range of professionals involved in case management.
  • Analytical skills are necessary to ensure attention to detail during assessments, therapy sessions, case management, and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships and professional boundaries with clients and their families.
  • Good judgment is required for evaluating and analyzing various situations.

VII. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of various substance abuse treatment modalities, including therapeutic communities, and the bio-psycho-social aspects of chemical dependency and mental health.
  • Knowledge of Maryland licensure and human rights regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and assist them in navigating their specific challenges.
  • Capability to identify client needs and foster their trust and cooperation in achieving their goals.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, external agencies, and the public.
  • Competence in collaborating with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Comfortable with technology to perform the duties outlined above.
