About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Sustainability Seasonal Assistant to join our team at the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks. As a key member of our Green Team, you will play a vital role in supporting our sustainability initiatives and contributing to our mission to inspire others to take action.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meeting Coordination: Attend Green Team meetings to take meeting minutes and coordinate team action items.
  • Sustainability Data Management: Support projects related to the collection of internal sustainability data and metrics. Compile and present this data in reports, specifically the Impact Report and the Conservation and Science annual report, and other formats to communicate findings.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain records of sustainability initiatives, progress, and results.
  • Site Assessments: Conduct site assessments, including indoor and outdoor recycling bin audits, compost bin audits, and asset inventorying. Map locations for each assessment type and record the data via park maps or floor plans where applicable.
  • Event Coordination: Coordinate the Zoo's Plastic Free Ecochallenge event, including working with the Zoo's communications team to review, edit, and update materials, providing support in sponsor solicitation, and updating action items and content for the PFEC website.
  • Team Leadership: Serve as the Zoo's team captain during the event, with responsibilities including posting updates, encouraging participants, and supporting the team's efforts.
  • Program Evaluation: Work with Ecochallenge to provide a program evaluation or report upon completion of the PFEC event.
Requirements
  • Education: At a minimum, pursuing an undergraduate degree in sustainability or environmental field or other relevant disciplines, or one year of relevant paid experience.
  • Skills: Demonstrates keen interests and knowledge in key sustainability issues and frameworks, standards, and rating methodologies. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with particular expertise in Excel. Strong communication and writing skills; ability to present findings in a thoughtful and concise manner. Experience collecting and analyzing data.
  • Personal Qualities: Self-motivated, proactive, and committed. Able to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Availability: Flexible schedule with availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Teamwork: Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Adherence to Policies: Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures, including but not limited to safety protocols required.
