Lead Patient Care Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Patient Care Technician to join our team at Carilion Clinic. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living.
Key Responsibilities- Provide basic nursing care and perform advanced technical skills for specified age groups according to established standards.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and grooming.
- Appropriately document and report patient observations to licensed staff.
- Transport patients, supplies, specimens, equipment, and other items within the facility.
- Contribute to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities and actively participate in obtaining desired service line/departmental outcomes.
- Exhibit competent knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) and assist with chart audits.
- Participate in unit quality surveillance activities and actively engage in unit shared governance and/or organization councils/committees.
- Lead unit huddles and participate in interdepartmental patient rounds (IDRs).
- Provide support for department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
- Order department/unit supplies and equipment and stock/organize supplies.
- Assist with customer service in wayfinding, answering phones, and making meaningful connections with patients and visitors.
- Process equipment between patients as needed, including cleaning unit-based equipment and gathering supplies.
- Operate and maintain general office equipment and follow procedures for timely equipment repairs.
- Lead streamlined, timely, and comprehensive admission, transfer, and discharge processes, prioritizing the patient experience.
- Welcome and assist patients and visitors, serving as a face of the unit and role-modeling service excellence behaviors.
- Demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Monitor the cleanliness of the unit waiting and break rooms and perform safety/environmental rounds with multidisciplinary team members.
- Assist with maintaining regulatory compliance, including refrigerator management, glucose meter maintenance, and equipment room storage.
- May be responsible for phlebotomy, nonsterile wound care dressings, saline lock replacement, and colostomy bag changes, as competency allows.
- Assist with ongoing training and precepting of new and current employees.
- Engage in evidence-based practices that enhance the patient experience, including safety rounding and effective communication.
- High school diploma or equivalent education required.
- Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification preferred, with AHA BLS-HCP certification required within 6 months of hire.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills required.
