This role is situated within the Veterans Health Administration's Police Service. The primary objective of the Law Enforcement Officer is to safeguard Veterans, patients, staff, contractors, volunteers, and visitors within VA facilities. Ensuring safety and security is crucial for the VA to effectively serve and honor America's Veterans.

Key Responsibilities

The Officer is responsible for maintaining a secure environment across all VA facilities, which may include various jurisdictional settings such as medical centers, outpatient clinics, and domiciliaries nationwide. This position plays a critical role in the VA Police Services, often being the first point of contact for Veterans and visitors at VA facilities. The Officer is expected to engage, empathize, and communicate effectively with all individuals to ensure a positive experience and the safety of the environment.

Essential Duties:
  • Act as a Law Enforcement Officer, primarily working on properties owned or managed by the Veterans Affairs.
  • Deliver policing services across diverse jurisdictional environments, applying the appropriate laws and regulations.
  • Provide services at various VA facilities, which may span large geographical areas.
  • Perform duties off departmental properties in compliance with federal laws and VA policies.
  • Ensure the safety of Veterans, staff, and visitors, using necessary force to uphold laws and regulations.
  • Safeguard sensitive medical information in accordance with privacy laws and policies.
  • Carry firearms and other weapons, deescalate situations, and determine appropriate use of force.
  • Inform individuals of their rights and protect their constitutional and civil rights.
  • Conduct investigations and apprehensions related to criminal offenses, including transporting U.S. officials and conducting emergency responses.
  • Preserve evidence, prepare detailed incident reports, and testify in court as required.
  • Patrol facilities on foot, in vehicles, or by bicycle, intervening in criminal activities and responding to emergencies.
  • Provide training on drug and contraband identification techniques.
  • Participate in suicide prevention initiatives, often being the first responder to Veterans in crisis.
Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Work Schedule: Hours assigned as needed by the Police Service.

Travel Requirements: Some travel may be necessary for training purposes.

Position Description: Law Enforcement Officer

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.
  • Applicants may be subject to drug screening prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • May be required to serve a probationary period.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process is required.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all VA Health Care Personnel.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is required for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation. This includes knowledge of laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, and responsibilities for maintaining order and protecting life and property.

Medical Requirements: The role requires moderate to strenuous physical exertion. Applicants must have good vision, the ability to distinguish colors, and the capacity to hear conversational voices.
